My Problem with Ashley Cole is this - pace aside, he's next-to-useless going forward.

He's a great athlete and defender, but he's still go zero crossing ability.

Bridge is not excellent defensively like Cole is, but like Grosso for instance, he's a very good footballer, and can weigh a pass & a cross very well. He'd be much better for Joe Cole to have as an overlap on the left -hand side. And I do believe that he's quite decent from set-pieces as well.

in my opnion, Cole has been pretty average recently. Both Lennon and Messi were both all over him. As an Arsenal fan this is totally biast, but i'd much rarther have Clichy than Ashley at the moment. I would rarther have cole than bridge though.

problem with this argument is that messi and lennon can be completely undefendable for all opposition at times.. just the type of players they are.. cole seems to be getting back to something approaching his best

Cole does look like he is getting back to his best. I wonder if he will get up to the speed he had a few years back if he does he will be a great test for Messi who seems to be the most explosive player on the ball over the first two or three strides.

Totally agree.

Its not suprising that Ronaldo thinks Cole is best - because from a defensive point of view, he is.

Ronaldo probably remembers Euro '04 game but I doubt Cole left his own half in the 2 hours of play.

It depends what type of football you like.

Ironically, Cole would have been the best LB Chelsea could have had over the last 2 years of 4-5-1 but now they play a narrow midfield people like Bridge, Zambrotta, Grosso, Carlos, Mathieu would be better.

Cole was the best player for England on Wednesday. He was also arguably the best player versus Barca at Camp Nou and was VERY effective in attack.

His short passing and first touch are first class.

His crossing is poor, probably because at Arsenal he never had to.

I would say he isnt THE best, but there is absolutely no doubting he is in the top 5. He rarely gets beaten or embarrassed in a match, a la Boulahrouz (also a top full back) has recently Vs Keane and Ronaldinho
