Post by Oleguerisntthatbad Wed Nov 29, 2006 10:16 am

FIFA has released the 3 "finalists" for World Player of the Year..

    1: Cannavaro
    2: Zidane
    3: Ronaldinho

My money is on Ronaldinho, since FIFA will also present special prizes for the World Cup thereby making WPY an award that is more based on performance throughout the year. Dinho is league and CL winner, whereas Cannarvaro won the WC and Zidane won nothing.

Zidane will probably get the silver, as a recognition for his career, but only shone in a handfull of games so I doubt that he will get gold.

Cannavaro, bronze, as he was solid, but nothing special, apart from the very important World Cup.

Cannavaro is a very good stopper but that is it.. he has hardly brought anything new to the game.. I am surprised that Henry is overlooked yet again Rolling Eyes

Eto'o should be there, IMO, but you can't have 2 players from the same club, so it is just bad luck that Ronaldinho is the more "mediatic" of the two..

    C. Ronaldo wouldn't be a bad choice either, if he only had had a longer run in the CL. He a had a great World Cup and has really shown that he is a "crack" for Man Utd. Next year..

    Who deserves it more though?

For the past year I'd say Eto'o. Excellent in the league, scored vital goals in the Champions league including the final and Cameroon not qualifying can hardly be held against him.

Also don't see the problem with two players from the same club if they deserve it. Don't think many would argue Barcelona were the best team in Europe last year.

IMO the top 3 should have been:

    Eto'o
    Buffon
    Henry

Materazzi deserves it more than Canna - after all he got further than Canna in the CL and at elast managed to score in the final + LEGITIMATELY won the league Whistle

I suppose its a tribute to one of the best players of the last 10 - 15 years. Also gave the best solo performance of the year by a mile against Brazil.

Are you sure on that? Maybe the best of the World Cup but I'm sure there have been some league performances that better it Whistle

So he wins an annual award based on ONE game? scratch

Do you REALLY think that is how the competition should be run?

And as for the 'tribute' element of your arguement its not as though he hasn't won it before.

Fact of the matter is, apart from 2 or 3 games at the World Cup he was thoroughly average!

I agree he doesn't deserve to be there, just think thats why he done it.

Like it or not France would of never made the finals without him. So if you take away Zidane's influence on the World cup, you should effectively take away Henry's as well.

    My top 3 -

    Eto'o
    1 of Buffon/Cannavaro
    1 of Kaka/Dinho

I think some people chronically underrate the players in our league becasue of an out of sight out of mind mentality

In smaller countries in Europe (i.e Denmark, Sweden, Belgium etc), Asia and in North America the EPL is dominating ratings as far as I know.

This award is simply a joke now.

Where is Eto'O and even Henry.

Zidane - He was poor for Madrid from January, but it just goes to show you only need a few sound World Cup games to be nominated.

Dinho is there as a celebrity.
