Yeah, just what I was about to say...also Deco has done that a bit this season. And Giuly shoots a lot but generally his shots are crap.

Sorry. but had to reply to this: Gerrard??!! I thought this was about players who were scared to shoot? How does Gerrard's name fit into this? The guy is hardly shy of a shot!
Carrick is exceptionally bad for this - worst part of his game is he simply never shoots. The few times he does he looks fair decent.
So many Arsenal players fall into this category its untrue.
Gary Neville is another one. Poops his pants when bearing down on goal. Probably the worst I've seen

I wasn't talking about his fear of shooting. Rather the fact that he's too often directly at the keeper or off target... At one stage this season something like 5 of every 6 of his shots were going off target...

About some England players... please don't make me directly anti-English or whatever anti... But, what you think of this...?
Netherlands - England
Gerrard was a good example of a goal phobia... he was so amazed he was standing eye in eye with Henk Timmer he decided to place the ball directly. While he had enough time to call his mum first, thinking about the shopping he has to do for Christmas etc...
Rooney with his header was also a kind of a phobia. He could have controlled the ball on his breast first and kick the ball then in the goal... he had also the time.... he decided to head the ball while the ball had no speed and so it was stupid to head...
At the end of the game he had again a huge chance and he also took it immediately while he had more time....

True. Cant argue with that. Composure infront of goal was lacking in that game certainly. I understood the heading of the thread though to relate to those players who were scared of shooting, not those who lacked composure (although there may sometimes be a link there, in the case of Neville!)

Re: Players with goal phobia?
gerrard is a better player when relying on instinct. give him too much time to finish and he'll hit a feeble shot straight at the keeper so you are spot on with that ricky. Much the same as Mr drogba

Yes I know. but you can train your coolness. If you are one on one with the keeper and you are surprised about that because you never trained that you can get nervous. They probably forgot to train that aspect of finishing and the phobia will stay alive...
When I saw that Gerrard move I realised why he missed that penalty against Portugal... He lacks a lot of confidence...!

Re: Players with goal phobia?
it's a weird one with gerrard. For example get him out wide and he will instantly provide a brilliant cross for you.... give him time to deliver a corner and he'll consistently hit the first man. it's all about composure and it's the one area of gerrard's game that if he improves he will take himself to a whole other level. kuyt also suffers from this. a mixture of the all action styles and more composure is what they should be striving for but it's ovbiously easier said than done.RicardolphTheRedNosedJol wrote:Rafa the Grinch wrote:gerrard is a better player when relying on instinct. give him too much time to finish and he'll hit a feeble shot straight at the keeper so you are spot on with that ricky. Re: Players with goal phobia?
Train train train... and the phobia will be gone or minimalised.... This is also the fact for taking penalties
BTW giving a cross, assist is completely different from when you give the finishing touch....

Re: Players with goal phobia?
Penalties, though, are a very controlled situation.
NLP-type training should enable the individual to consistently repeat accurate performance under pressure (e.g. the same low shot into the corners) which would score a penalty 90% of the time. Generally though saved penalties are poorly struck.
