What did you lose on Veron Smile

Say what you like, I think Veron was a risk worth taking. Just won the league 3 seasons in a row and was trying to get another Champions league and he was one of the best midfielders in Europe. He still helped us to a title and had some great games in Europe.

Chelsea got a worse deal out of that anyway.

Christ you can talk some drivel sometimes. So Veron was a risk worth taking but signing the then Champions League Golden Boot was a risky signing? 'Specially for £6mil when just a few months before he was a £20mil striker in his prime Rolling Eyes

Smith needs to get away from united ASAP or a promising career will be lost to ridicule. he is nearly a joke figure at the minute

I wish he bloody would, but he keeps saying he wants to stay ffs. he just does not get it. He must of known earlier in the season he was not ready to play, but he was in the papers saying he will be back next week etc, he plays and is 100 miles off the pace, and total garbage as usual.

Its bollocks really because he was due to leave last summer anyway, same as Morientes for probably a bigger fee.

Kewell was out of contract and an injury prone pre madonna, who had his best days way behind him. Alan Smith was an England international (not united quality though) and the only player from Leeds with his reputation intact as he tried to drag Leeds out of the relegation zone. The price we paid for Smith was about right maybe a million more.

Regarding Veron £30m was the going rate for the top 3 midfielder in the best league in the world (at the time) and top 5 in the world. Mendieta was going for £32m, Buffon £37m and Crespo for £38m. That was the climate and that was the price you pay for players who you think can improve the best side in England and one of the best in europe (at the time). He didnt reach the levels he was capable of in the league but in the CL he was class. He won one league title and got to the CL semis so he did ok.

Was it really? Were you successful (this was before the CL win), were you rich with strikers, did you have a lot of money to waste?

But by that argument, Veron actually caused your team to win less.

And no we didn't have a lot of strikers - do you think signing a proven striker was less risky than not signing anyone? Who else was available at the time - James Beattie?

But put all that to one side, leave this obsession with comparing Morientes (a failure we have admitted and moved on) to Smith (a failure you continue to cling on to) - the question is, why is Smith such a scumbag?

they are both shit signings on comparable levels though Morientes was then regarded highly by most,

Veron was then probrably the best or in the top three midfielders/ players in the world

Although he cost £27 million or whatever

It also is based opon the position of the club when signing the player Unite were all conquering Treble winners and certainly in the top three clubs in the world and the richest

£20m for Morientes, if he was worth so much why did Real ship him of to Monaco for nothing, no one would ever have pid that much for him.

Morientes would of played more games up front than Smith and only scored one more goal.

Funny that. Cos when we paid £5mil for him he'd just had his most successful season for Leeds and wasn't even 25 yet...

14 goals in 31 games for a team that survived relegation in the last month of the season isn't bad for a second striker/left-winger, issit?
