On behalf of the IFFHS, board member Jean Fraiponts had come to the Amsterdam ArenA to honour Huntelaar. Right after Ajax's training, the 'best striker in the world' received his golden football award. ,,A great prize for a great achievement’’, said Fraiponts in his presentation speech.
The IFFHS had sent the Ajax forward an invitation for the football gala in Salzburg on 8 January. But from that day Ajax go on training camp in South Africa.
The competition of the IFFHS is a yearly phenomenon. Measuring stick is the number of goals a player scores in a competition that ends in 2006. In the 2005-2006 season Huntelaar scored 35 goals in the league and playoffs. The striker played for Ajax and sc Heerenveen last season.
The football statisticians collect data from over 50 national leagues each year. Until this week, Huntelaar had competitors in the Peruvian and Chilean leagues. Both leagues finished recently, and the two other players did not pass the Dutch striker. Hakan Sukür was the last European striker before Huntelaar to claim the title of best scoring striker in the world. The Turkish forward received his award in 1997.
