Becks to America = a junkfood footballer joins the McSoccerLeague

    a match made in heaven

initially, he'll give football in the US a boost; finally a pin-up, an alleged superstar in the MLS

he'll get tons of exposure for football as well; kids can dream of unimagined riches ...

then Americans will discover that the brief energy surge did not last; they will yearn for more complex carbs rather than a McBeck; come McRonaldo, McFigo, McOwen and McRooney in due course

Americans will feast like kings yet starve to death; their eyes will become dull, their waists will bloat, they will become irritable and agressive without having the energy to do something about it phsycially; they will then discover that man needs no muscle if he has a gun; streets gangs will fight each other with arms; musicians will glorify that violence; more kids will end up in Texan prisons than in schools and politicians will start fighting the world's evil with the most sophisticated weapons ever devised

    hell

    they might even invade Iraq

pure speculation, of course; but it's possible

    @ tweeds

I promise you, BigBac will raise the profile of the sport in the US of A; no doubt

the problem is, we all remember our first time (of anything)

Soccer is off the radar as a TV sport in America, right ?

Becks will generate so much media heat that non-traditional football fans will want to peek

and then they'll see BigBac Laugh

Americans like their stars to be STRONG, MASCULINE and COMPETITIVE

Becks can't run, can't dribble, has no flair, does not tackle....

his trademark crosses are not nearly enough to generate interest amongst the peeking sceptics; in fact, they' ll wonder what all the fuss is about

Jordan, LeBron, Favre, Tiger, Agassi and Co had a product to sell

Becks does not; if football already has the reputation of being a girly sport in the US, McBeck will only enhance this

none of this will trouble David or his marketing gurus

word has it their initial campaign is going to be called

" 2 for the price of 1" = buy a BigBac and get a McToothpick for free Wink

this is how the NYTimes sees the move

Give him the ball and he can launch if 50 yards for someone to chase. They'll love it.

    Exactly.

He's team mates probably won't but the fans will.

I bet he gets penalties as well as all corners and freekicks as well.

Oh dear, I can see the US fully adapting a "quarterback" culture approach to football as a result. The diehard American "football" fans won't be amused.

Becks will still get the goals from set pieces, because the keepers won't be good enough to keep the majority out.

Do you remember the shoot-outs the MLS had around 1993-5?
For more goals and a more exciting approach, instead of penalties (and draws!!), they had an icehockey kind of one on one run towards the keeper and try to score. As a result the following WC and international games they sucked at penalties. Laugh ok

One of the things I remember best about the MLS, aside from the empty stadiums and playing on grid-iron pitches.

So it was like a beat the keeper compeition?

They used to have that as half time entertainment at the riverside....get a couple of fans on the pitch see if they could beat some semi-pro keeper.

    @cooper

    you are probably right

them Americans will not play him on the wing but as a quaterback

McQuaterpounder will make any kind of meaningful football impossible but pundits will be able to rave about his long-range-precision-shots

future generations of American kids will try to imitate this long-ball game ; the USof A will not win ANYTHING for the next 50 years as a result

    it's all very depressing

    now, what next ?

I hear that Moaninho intends to cross the pond as well; apparently the SanFranciso SuperSonics have offerd him $100 million per year for mixing first class cement

he is already asking for reinforcements

Cashley, Terry and Flumps are said to be following developments closely

oh dear, will the EPL now bleed dry Laugh

That's what I find funny about this as well. Most Americans think Beckham is the Pele of football, so they will be expecting someone like Ronaldinho when he plays there. Now that Beckham can't even score free kicks anymore, I'm curious about what their reaction will be.

The story is that my Christmas avatar was past its sell-by date and I'd been having a conversation with saints and/or waft with a philosophical bent soMr Popper was in my mind.

A lot has been made of this issue, but I think that Americans are for the most part used to huge differences in wealth, and 20 grand a week is hardly 'scratching a living'...

Wonderfull!!! An Englishman will raise the popularity of football in North America something the past greats could never do. USA could very well master the sport and beat the best. This is easily possible within in 10 years. Then we all will know him as Sir David Beckham....Very Happy
Amazing what you can do in this world if your English....Ale
