For me its a very tough one as both were world class and easily the best keeper in the world at their respective peaks, however I'm going for Schmeichal.

His achievements with Denmark were fantastic.

His achievements in the league with ALL his clubs were amazing. Even at the age of 39 he was still one of the best keepers in the league at citeh.

His achievements in the champs league were also amazing, he would pull off some frankly unbelievable saves.

He also had a tremendous presense on the pitch

Gigi The bandit. The best keeper of the last 10 year - consistantly robbed teams of points; has presence as the most feared keeper to be against; by far the best keeper in his league and arguably Europe as well in majority of seasons; always turns/turned up for big matches. Greatest player in a squad that got the WC title. And if The WPOTY was decided on who performed in June this year (like they did Rolling Eyes ) he should have been WPOTY in the autumn of his carreer. Loyal too if that helps.

Schmeichel essentially played for one of the most attack minded clubs in the World at the time and was outstanding - saving United on countless occassions, and Denmark who relied on his prowess particularly in 1992.

Buffon , whilst a good keeper, had a far less relentless time of it playing for Juve and Italy, hardly sides renowned for leaving gaps at the back.

Schmeichel's saves Vs Rapid Vienna, vs Inter Milan in and Dennish Bergkamp's pen in the treble winning season wrote a special kind of history

I agree, Gigi has already done more, and btw Gigi may not have reached the peak of his career as yet, he is only 28! That is young for a gk!

Winning the European Championships with Denmark is every bit as impressive as winning the World cup with Italy imo.

He also has a Champions league medal that he played a massive part in as well.

Its pointless, they're both exceptional keepers.

The point about Schmeichel playing in an attacking team doesn't hold up as well as others would like to.
He played in the team that by far dominated the premiership since its incession. ManU bullied the other teams in the league, during the two horse race period. And it wasn't as if he had Bramble and Rammage in front of him; (some of) the best defenders of the league were playing in front of him during his tenure.

One of the best sights in football for me as a Kid was watching Schmeichel pick the ball up and THROW it 50+ yards to Giggs/Kanchelskis to set up another Man Utd attack.

This sets him apart from Gigi for me... both of them brilliant Keepers, and in fairness to Buffon, he's more than lived up to his incredible £31m transfer fee.

He is a crap presenter/ball room dancer, but the best keeper. I have ever seen.

I just remember when you watched him live and he was doing his warm ups and he'd have the Goalkeeping coach in the other half collecting his throws. Fucking incredible.
