    can anybody please explain the reasoning behind this more than slightly bizarre decision without referring to the war, towels on sun-loungers, hairy armpits or the Hoff ?

    if Buffon had won the World Cup ALL BY HIMSELF whereas Lehmann was merely part of a good team you could use it as evidence for his superiority

    however, Italy merely defeated Germany in the last two minutes, would probably have lost a penalty shoot-out with Germany lifting the Cup themselves after the final against France

    that this did NOT happen has NOTHING to do with either Buffon or Lehmann

    tell me what Buffon has achieved BY HIMSELF that was better than what his Teutonic counterpart did:

    Well technically he won Serie A and got embarassed by Cesc in the quarters of the CL Wink

    I admit Lehmann generally had a better season but he had a few dodgy moments in the league whereas Buffon has been pretty consistent for ten years now.

    We all know that the award isn't based purely on one season, reputation plays a large part in the decision

    you are quite right , he was Bundesliga top scorer AND assister with something like 24 goals in 25 games

    sceptics will now say, it's only the Bundesliga

    tough luck that he repeated that form in the World Cup where he was the best striker by far as well as the top scorer

    still, Henry is ahead of him

    it's a meaningless popularity contest

    still, I find it annoying that people on here revert to reputation just as much as the judges of the award

    what's the point of an international messageboard if armchair experts merely churn out cliches and received wisdom

    pretty depressing stuff

    if Buffon REALLY DESERVES his ranking and endless people on here seem to think so , they have to be able to argue his case

    you act suprised. Of course its a popularity contest- Buffon played for Juve and Italy, bigger attractions than arsenal and Germany respectively when it comes to such awards.

    I don't think the great Petr even made the top 25.

    JT only just about made the top 20.

    It really does show how poor the awards are.

    Otto, totally disagree.... In fact, I think Buffon should have finished over Cannavaro and should have won the world cup!!!

    But lets get back to your arguement, on two counts:

    1. I think most people on this board will agree that Buffon as a gk is better than Lehman over the last 7-8 years.... I think their valuation speaks for itself, with last Buffon's transfer fee (5 years ago!) being £30M - that was for a reason. Buffon has been the most consistantly brilliant GK of our times, so as far as reputation goes (which always counts for something in any award) Buffon has a bigger one than any goalkeeper since Zoff (and probably beyond).

    2. As far as this year is concerned (2006) Buffon has been his brilliant self throughout... maybe one or two bad games by his standards, which is remarkable for a goalie. In the world cup, Buffon was (rightfully) awarded the goalkeeper of the tournament, and would have won it even if Italy had lost to france (these awards were decided before the final). See that game against Czech Rep again and you will understand what I am saying - Buffon was immense, Cech looked like an amataur in comparison, and even Nedved complimented Buffon "for winning the game for Italy". Lehman was good, but Buffon had a perfect world cup. And Buffon has saved Juventus so many times this year in Serie A and B... Buffon is a legend, and I am pretty sure that 20 years from now, his name will be spoken in the same breadth as Yashin.

    Popularity contest, maybe. But even on pure merit/talent Buffon >> Cech at the mo.
