The same could be said about Given for Newcastle, Obispo still thinks he can't command his area well enough...

I hope you can recognise the slight difference between Casillas and Given though

Basically most of the Premiership fans will vote for Schmeichel because they watched him week in week out, whereas I bet most of you haven't watched Buffon week in week out.

I haven't watched Buffon or Schmeichel all that much myself, so I'm not voting. And also I don't think you can compare yet. Like bluenine said, Buffon is only 28. Barring serious injuries, he still has at least another 6 years in him. That's 2 more European Championships (including next year) and a World Cup.

That is such a stupid arguement... Buffon played at a higher level for a team which was better defensively, which was also largely down to him.

Your arguement is like saying that Ronaldinho is not that good a player coz he plays for teams which are so attack minded. That does not matter, Ronaldinho shows how good he is anyways. Just like Buffon. You obviously have not seen enough of Buffon if you make statements like that, coz buffon was teh worlds best keeper even at Parma!

I voted for Schmiechel, but it is very close.

The problem is that both have played in the top teams in their respective leagues, and therefore were afforded the advantages of really strong defences, so maybe we didn't see exactly how many save they could make like Given.

The other point is that they played at slightly different times.

In schmiechel's day Kahn was the other standout keeper, buffon was the most expensive on his potential but don't think he was considered the best at that time, but now there are a few like cech, casillas etc and buffon is the standout.

oh yeah and buffon certainly has it easier for italy than schmiechel did for denmark

Schmeichel was only excellent in a mediocre league.

Everybody has different opinions, but for me its clear cut, the big dane wins it.

Not only did he dominate his goal, he would organise his defence with more vigor than an army instructor, a truely fabulous shot stopper, had enormous command of his area, a leader and a winner.
