He's pretty highly rated, but I remember this chap didn't impress me at the world cup, he looked a bit sluggish. I suppose it's only a loan deal though(with the option of buying).

I assumed that deal fell through because Boro got the opportunity to sign Woodgate.
He's a unit though, looks like a bit of a beast.

Now now, lets give him a chance before we write him off.

Nah, we wanted Woodgate regardless of what happened with this guy...we got Huth instead of him.

Gooch's a good defender. He's way better than Woodgate already, and plays like Lescott. Newcastle may be making the steal of this transfer window with Gooch's signing.

Terry AND Rio had a much worse World Cup than Gooch. I'm telling you Boro, Gooch may be the steal. Newcastle on to a huge second half if he gels with the team. I'm sure Solano will help him.

Only thing of note that Gooch did was give away a penalty, from what I remember anyway.

T'was a joke desicion though.borocooper wrote:Only thing of note that Gooch did was give away a penalty, from what I remember anyway.
Did alright from what I remember, was very good against the Italians, but was all at sea against the Czechs, though there were team-mates who were far worse.
Rio had a poor world cup? Come. Off. It.

You should have gone for Milito of zaragoza. He is a hard no nonsnense defender who will be very good in the epl i reckon.

If I remember correctly that penalty was an awful call by the ref. The only game Gooch looked bad was against Czechia, BUT he didn't get any help from his midfielders. The Czechs just went through them, can't just blame Gooch for a total team screw up. Gooch had an OK WC overall. On the other hand Terry and Rio had a WC to forget with major INDIVIDUAL screw ups.

Fine defender as well. Same with Gooch, if he gels at Tottenham, then a huge second half push by your team.

Im surprised Madrid havent gone after Gooch, rather than waiting for Woodgates's loan spell to end.

Re: Onyewu Having Medical @ Newcastle
To be honest it doesn't matter to me how he did at the world cup. Look at Zokora, good at the WC but poor in the premiership. Terry, poor at the WC but good in the premiership(same goes for Lampard).
He's obviously been putting in some good performances at club level to get this amount of interest.

If a player is strong mentally and is professional then he'll succeed. More players have succeed here than have failed, we've just had a few high profile failure, that's all.doninha wrote:come on Kimbo, don't let ruin this one also...

Re: Onyewu Having Medical @ Newcastle
I posted my thoughts on him in a thread a couple weeks ago when he was linked with Chelsea...he's supposed to be good but every time I've watched him he's been nothing special, even in an MLS game. So I have mixed emotions, I guess it's all about how he adapts.
Apparently there's some French striker Roeder's trying to bring in on loan. Can't remember his name.

Re: Onyewu Having Medical @ Newcastle
Oh...then I'm probably mixing him up with someone else. For some reason I remember watching a game where the commentator was talking about the young defender, bright prospect, etc. but I didn't think he was that great. I probably put 2 and 2 together but made 5.

He's called Frederic Piquionne, i'm not too keen though. The deal is that we take him on loan as long as we buy him for £5m in the summer. He's 28 and has a pretty average scoring record, 22 goals in 84 games for St Etienne.
