Winning The Treble? Empty Winning The Treble?

Post by Batman Fri Feb 09, 2007 12:26 pm

Has your team ever won the treble? If no, then how close has it come?

Treble = Winning the League, main domestic Cup competition and the Champions League.

It is a hard thing to do. Here is how close Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have come in the last 3 seasons.

    Chelsea Season 2005-06
    Premiership - win.
    Fa Cup - semi-final.
Champions League - first knockout round.

    Liverpool Season 2004-05
    Premiership - 5th.
    Fa Cup - 3rd round.
    Champions League - win.

    Chelsea Season 2004-05
    Premiership - win.
    Fa Cup - fifth round.
    Champions League - semi-final.

    Arsenal Season 2003-04
Premiership - win, without losing a game.
    Fa Cup - semi-final.
    Champions League - quarter-final.

A team that came very close.....

FC Bayern München Season 1998-99 Very Happy
    Bundesliga - win.
DFB Cup - final, lose on pens.
    Champions League - lose final.

Can these teams: Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Man Utd or any other teams win the treble this season?

    Inter this season:

Serie A: Leading by 11 points
Coppa Italia: In the final, in line to win it for the 3rd consecutive time
    Supercup: Already won
    CL: In the second round

So we are in line. I think we will do the domestic treble, the CL is always tough to call. If we continue to play like we have the last 3 months, we will win it. But thats a big IF.

Just came up against too much quality in the CL ok

the closest we've come was 1977 - EC, First Division winners, League Cup, FA cup finalists.

Yes. Ajax did it in 1972

Dutch League, KNVB Cup and the European Cup

.. then won the 1st UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup

    Not bad.

Only four teams have won the European Treble.

consists of winning a country's top tier league and the major domestic cup competition, as well as the European Cup/Champions League

    Celtic - 1967
    Ajax - 1972
    PSV - 1988
    Manchester United - 1999

There was a clear foul in the mancs second goal aswell. Clear foul. Rolling Eyes

We won a treble in 1984. League, league cup, European Cup. And in 2001 obviously there was the cup-treble (quintuple).

The funniest case where a club was close to winning a trebble and failed miserably in the end was Bayer Leverkusen in 2002. They were ahead in the league by like 6 points with 3 games to go, they were in the CL final and the German cup final. Not only did they lose their lead in the league, but they lost against Madrid in the CL final and got trashed in the German cup final by Shalke I believe.

I remeber that, they were so devastated after the first defeat they never rise again and end up losing all competitions
