    Otto,

Let us hope it is an encounter to rival those of Bremen-Juve, Bremen-Udinese, Milan-Schalke, Italy-Germany etc.

Goals are assured in this match. Milan will have to play a clever game, Bayern are a competent opponent and not to be underestimated. For me, its too close to call, but if Milan can prevent an away goal at San Siro and take a lead to the Allianz, i am quietly confident they will have the intelligence and focus to see the game out.

Italy-Germany encounters are always unpredictable though, moments of magic could decide this game. Maybe Milan will petition to have the ties moved to Florence and Dortmund, the guidance of history may help there! Wink

    Anyway, best of luck, Ale

I'd say Roma - ManU is the game of the round - even though United is missing players, both teams will turn it on - very attacking.

Bayern - milan is a v good one, which can be fireworks or dull. There's plenty of potential for a snoozefest (milan not scoring, bayern not scoring, milan defense v bayern defense).

Didnt Milan anhilate them last year, Bayern are worse now than they were last year (although so are Milan but to a leeser extent) this suggests it will be an average game.

Chelsea v valencia (they both love a brawl, which makes compelling viewing) and Roma v United (the only attacking teams left in the tournament) are the ties of the round.

Two faded giants in their respective leagues.

    Based on names- massive.

Based on current form both domestically and in Europe- this isnt even in the top 3 ties of the round.

First of all, this is the tie of the 1/4 finals based on history alone. Both teams have won 10 European cups combined, been runners up often.

But let me get this straight, even if Bayern knock Milan out, this will never count as revenge for Dortmund, don't let otto tell you otherwise. Clubs and national teams are two different things, and we'll get our real revenge soon enough, hopefully in one of the next major competitions like the EC or WC. Very Happy

By their own high standards, both Bayern and Milan had a rather mediocre season in their domestic leagues so far indeed. The difference is however that Bayern had a very convincing CL season so far, beat Inter on their own turf, won their group and remained unbeaten in the group stages, before they knocked out Real in two dramatic matches, clearly being the better team in the 2nd leg. Milan's CL season was not as convincing so far, mainly because they seem to have difficulties scoring away.

I think that this really is an open tie, 50/50 IMHO. History speaks for Milan, while the advantage of having the 2nd leg at home, and the increasing form speaks for Bayern. Hopefully, we'll see two exciting matches. May the best team win. Ale

But in another post I've liestened to Otto bleat on about the importance of not looking at the NAMES, but the teams and current form.

Bayern were convincing in the groups, but their poor domestic form since coupled with the fact that beating a shite defensive Madrid side without Beckham playing was never going to be a magnificent achievement whichever way you look at it.

Milan have been unimpressive both at home and in the CL- beating Celtic in the 93rd minute by a single goal puts the achievements of Chelsea, Man U, PSV into perspective.

On history, THE game of the round,

on recent form and reality- not in the top 3

BTW- I expect Bayern to win this

    The ties

    1. Roma vs Man United - very attacking game guarenteed
    2. Milan vs Bayern - potential for fireworks, but also a snoozefest. Big name factor edges it over #3
    3. Chelsea vs Valencia - more likely to be a stale match than #2, with less likelihood of a greta match; possible upset might make it really interesting
    4. Liverpool vs PSV - for the neutral, two teams grinding out results. The opposite of Roma-United

to 2: "a potential snoozefest" : historically this is some of the greatest nonsense written on here during the last 12 months

German-Italian encounters are ALWAYS dynamite; most of the time well-contested, but even when not, they tend to produce high-scoring Italian wins

Bayern have scored truckloads of goals in the CL this season, quite a few against Inter and Real as well

    +

the Bayern defence is not super-strong, even if it will improve

this is the ONE tie that guarantees goals

    @ forza

    history is on your side

but there are many players that still remember the defeat at Milan's hands last season; they will be piping hot

    Bayern are favourites 57-43 Ale

    ----------------------

the tie is a dream come true, not least because of the potential semi

ManU would be great; the only German-English tie I would enjoy watching

SAF and Hitz have had many battles in the past as well

    otherwise, AS ROMA

imagine that: Bayern would have defeated Inter in the group stages, Milan in the quarters and Roma in the semis

revenge for Florence and Dortmund could not come thicker lol!

United might be plain unimpressive in CL, and Roma may depend too much on Totti, but doesn't change that both are attacking teams. EVen if the score ended up 1-0 it doesn't change the fact that it was a very attacking game (likely). Its just how those teams are made.

to 2: "a potential snoozefest" : historically this is some of the greatest nonsense written on here during the last 12 months

German-Italian encounters are ALWAYS dynamite; most of the time well-contested, but even when not, they tend to produce high-scoring Italian wins
I didn't deny it, I said potentially, which it is. Bayern are finding their form back post-Magath, but still were pretty dire sometimes before that. In theory Milan are a sexy team to watch, however they've been having trouble scoring in Europe. Bayern have been excelling and exceeding expectations in CL though so far.

This matchup will be either fireworks or Zzzzzz - only the extremes, nothing in between. Both will either turn up or be unimpressive. Doesn't guarentee it the way United-Roma does.

Oh there will be goals alright. I'm not predicting two legs of 0-0 and penalty shootouts. Its a question whether there will be action.

But the tie of the round is IMO Roma vs Man Utd.

I don't like our chances against Milan especially if Podolski gets the nod again over Pizarro or Makaay. Italia have Germany's number Otto. Traitor in what sense , Bayern have not been their best this season , we have players missing in important positions like AMC or a RW.
Milan havent been best either (havent seen them play but it took them 93 mins to get past Celtic) , it would be a good match but I dont expect a classic.
And traitor in the sense that I would be going to both away and home.

    @puro

I hear you about Italian teams being our Angstgegner

just like Brazil hate to play France

    Italians find the English difficult

the Spanish/English cannot cope with the Germans

    ...

in 1990 though Klinsi and Co WERE the best of the best

    the creme de la creme

    the Kraut of the Kraut

I give you that, Milan have an outside chance

the only way they can beat us , is by having Italian ladies as Stadium announcers; their raspy voices would throw us at the San Siro

all they need to do is make a public announcement every two minutes

" would the owner of the HH - WZ 124 , please remove his car "

" would the owner of the M - ABC 234, please contact the police."

    Milan vs Bayern : 10 - 0

    -------

anyway, Poldi likes the San Siro; he'll score a brace at least

    ;)
