Your World Class Squad of 23... Empty Your World Class Squad of 23...

Post by Tweesus Mon Apr 02, 2007 12:50 pm

Following on from a discussion elsewhere... if you were assigned as the manager of a 'world 23' that would be taken to play in an intergalactic football match, what would your 23 man squad be?

    Mine:

    Goalkeepers:

    Buffon, Cech, Casillas

    Defenders:

Alves, Sagnol, Lahm, Ferdinand, Marquez, Chivu,

    Midfielders:

Xavi, Essien, Ronaldo, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Scholes, Gerrard, Cambiasso, Makalele

    Forwards:

    Eto'o, Drogba, Messi, Villa, Henry

Contribute yours, then we can get debating Wink

Sagnol and Lahm - both truly world class fullbacks - bayern are truly blessed with these two ok

Gerrard - defo World class - can't see how that can be argued.

Henry - maybe not this season, but he's been injured - if you look at his scoring record for the previous 5 years you'd see why he's there

You guys are right. I am not being forthright.

    My revised World Class 23:

    Goalkeepers: Buffon, Peruzzi, Amelia

Defenders: Grosso, Zaccardo, Nesta, Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Grosso, Materazzi, Barzagli, Oddo

Midfielders: Gattuso, De Rossi, Pirlo, Camoranesi, Perrotta,

Forwards: Del Piero, Totti, Toni, Gilardino, Inzaghi, Iaquinta

I think this team can probably win a World Cup.

    I almost included Frings.

Lehmann isn't even a top 3 EPL keeper let alone a top 3 world keeper.

    Ballack Laugh

Klose has a good shout - I didn't even include Ibra so I've probably irritated more than yourself

Wiese - see Lehmann then take off a bit of experience

Not really, because I'm very sure that 98% of them don't even watch German football, especially league matches.

I reckon Germany has the best bunch of young GKs around.

But in all honesty blut, which Germans would you nominate (or playing in the German league).

Klose, VDV, Lahm, Frings, Lucio, Diego etc...

At this moment of time, if you consider the form of the players, I would actually not nominate Lahm and Klose, the only German players that were nominated in that thread. Says it all really.

Frings definitely deserves to be nominated, he is one of the very best central midfielders in the world, consistant great performance for club and country for years. If you nominate Lahm because of his World Cup matches, you definitely have to nominate Ballack for his international matches, consistent great performances for die Mannschaft for years. Frings + Ballack = one of the very best central midfield partnerships in the world, only rivaled by Gattuso and Pirlo IMHO.

And going by form, Schneider deserves to be nominated also. Being 33, he has his best season ever, some truly world class performances this season, be it in the league, in the UEFA Cup or for die Mannschaft.

So at this moment of time, I'd nominate Frings, Schneider and Ballack. Lahm's form is improving again, if he continues like this he'd be nominated also. Klose only if he stops thinking about his contract and starts to perform for his club (and country) again, that should take a while (unfortunately). And Wiese, if he keeps up this great form for another season.

I think you could argue the case with Frings but Scheider is up against C. Ronaldo, Messi and Kaka for the right midfield position and Ballack has been far from decent in the league

If depends on the system you want to play, Schneider does not necessarily have to be selected over Messi, Kaka or Ronaldo.

Ballack has been disappointing in the league this season by his standards, but so has Lahm, that's my point actually. If you nominate Lahm because of his World Cup performances, you have to nominate Ballack, because he had a very good WC, and great matches for die Mannschaft afterwards.

Besides, I just listed the German players I would consider worth being nominated at this point of time.
