Yes I can, there is a reason why Ronaldo to this day is closer to Scolari than to Ferguson despite only spending limited amounts of time with the latter.

There is also a reason why Ronaldo exploded in the national team before he did with United.

There is also a reason why his dip in form was much less pronounced for Portugal than it ever was for United.

    Do the maths.

If Ronaldo hadn't of played well for Man Utd then he would have never got called up for the Euros.

For Portugal he has more freedom. for Man Utd in the past he had to play on the wings, getting crosses into Ruud.

Now Ronaldo plays with alot more freedom for Man Utd.

Internationally he hardly set things alight in the REALLY big games though - he did pretty stuff much like in the EPL and didn't have that much end product - a lot of his goals came verses small international teams

    It's give and take though.

If you think building our team around Ronaldo a couple of seasons ago was an easy decision then I obviously can't agree with you.

    You silly foreigners lol! <Ale>

Ronaldo would still be tripping over his shoelaces and crying like a big girl if he had stayed in Portugal

I think we have to agree to disagree, I think back then he did too many tricks and his crossing was weak, but united were not playing to his strengths the way we have since Ruud stopped playing. Statistically he has improved vastly as a player, but in real terms, he hasnt improved that much, its just that he no longer has to devote his game to crossing the ball for Ruud.
    Laugh ok

Last season he was hogging the ball the entire time, failing to cross or pass the ball to Ruud and going for glory actions (passing two man then pass the ball back or waste another shot). If only he passed the ball to Ruud half the time like you said, United might have won last year. Ronaldo was by no means looking to pass the ball to Ruud last year. 3 out 4 times he didn't even try, let alone the pass making it to Ruud.

United's problem was that they had two players who weren't compatible: a targetman poacher who didn't get the service, and a selfish winger with no end product. Its not rocket science why United's attack didn't work like it should have.

In the end United gambled on youth potential (with still no real end product) and sold Ruud (though way too cheap).
    The gamble paid off. Kudos.

I am not blaming Ruud, as he is one of the best players we have had during my time as a united fan, a true world class striker.

What I was saying is that Ronaldo's game was to supply Ruud, but he isnt an orthodox winger, who gets to the byline and puts crosses in. I agree he was quite selfish and his crossing wasnt up to much or were they frequent enough for Ruud. This meant Ruud and Ronaldo didnt play to their strengths.

However when Saha played who's game was different, Ronaldo scored 10 goals (between Jan and May). We didnt have the players anymore to give Ruud the service he needed, so he was sold and yes for a lot less than he was worth.

Ps the situation you described was more Holland in the world cup, than united last season. Just replace Ronaldo with RVP or Robben.

Mate I am a massive Ronaldo fan, but you are going over the top, Ronaldo lacks the vision, self less ness and team work skills to become the greatest player the world has ever seen, unless you are talking about the Brazilian one who would recieved that accolade had it not been for injury.

Anyway Fergie has made Ronaldo the player he is, look what happened to Quaresma, who has similar abilty and was labbled the 'better' player when they were at Sporting. Read my earlier post about how Ronaldo is way ahead of similar player. He was never going to make an inconsistent kid the centre piece of his team, when he had established world class players like Scholes, Giggs, Keane and Ruud in the side. Were Manchester United, not dagenham.

"I think Ronaldo's ability on the ball is amazing and, the way he's played this season, he's been one of the best players in the Premier League and probably in the world.

There is nothing Diego can't do with the ball, and I seriously don't know any other player of his age with such a vision and creativity. He is the perfect number 10, and usually, it's central / attacking midfielders that dominate eras.

If he continues like this, only sky is the limit.

From what I've seen, i agree.

but these 'so called' awards are a popularity contest .. perform + entertain to a large audience = success.

If there is justice, he will win the best player of the league award this season, in his first (!) season for us in the Bundesliga. He will stay a couple of more years in Bremen and mature / improve, but in a few years, we won't be able to keep him realistically, and sell him for a huge price to one of the biggest European clubs.

He should stand a chance ..

I hope he stays at Bremen for the foreseeable future, Bremen has a chance to do well in the European Cups .. just need to keep the 'big' players (even Frings..)

but if the individual wants to leave .. nothing you can do, or can you ?

Yeah, you as an Ajax fan should know best how it is to lose your key players. But Bremen's financial situation is constantly improving, we already are one of the best clubs in the league in this respect. We will have a new stadium soon that will improve our finances even more. We lose key players, but we always manage to improve by replacing them with even better ones, and in future, it'll be easier for us to keep them.

Diego can't be replaced 1:1, and don't get me wrong, we won't sell him anytime soon. But if he moves, we will replace him with a different player, and only improve in the long run. The same can be said about Klose and Frings. I fully trust our board and staff.

Great goal, although Messi will take goal of the season. Diego and Robinho were trully wonderful at Santos, they had a telepathic understanding. When Diego didnt play that well at Porto, I thought maybe he is not as good as I thought he was. However he is playing like his Santos days, lets hope his mate Robinho also soon discovers his Santos form.
