On the just in of BBC sport.

Mike Ashley is the name apparently...

At this rate, you'll need a billionaire owner to compete in the EPL...

He's only bought 41.6% which doesn't give him control. So Fat Freddy survives, at least for now...

Id imagine that its pretty much inevitable if he has 41% and thats far more than enough to influence board decisions...

It makes him the majority shareholder, Freddy only has about 28%. It's only a matter of time.

I knew something was going on. I looked at the share price this morning and it was up to 84p, 20p higher than it was a couple of weeks ago. And Fat Freddy was saying he wasn't interested in selling, despite there being no speculation.

A new era for the Magpies,

    New Owner,

    New Manager,

    New Money....

Only concern i would have is that Mike Ashley has set up a company to purchase the club, thus the clubs assets will be up for grabs IF the club EVER went under.

As opposed to being a private individual.

He made around 100 million last year through his corporate company, so hes a wealthy man ok

Being the majority shareholder he can choose the chairman, so Fat Fred won't have a big influence even if he does stay. But if this guy wants 100% of the club he will get it. ok

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6684573.stm

Billionaire businessman Mike Ashley has launched a £133.1m ($263m) offer for Newcastle United football club.

The offer came after the retail entrepreneur said he had bought a 41.6% stake in the Premiership team from Sir John Hall's family for more than £55m.

Mr Ashley said his firm St James Holdings Limited (SJHL) had bought 55.3 million shares in the club at 100 pence a share.

He added that his offer priced the rest of the club's shares at the same level.

Earlier this year Mr Ashley earned himself more than £900m after the flotation of his Sports Direct retail chain which he set up in 1982.

The group runs the Sports World retail chain and Lillywhites, and its brands include Dunlop, Kangol and Karrimor.

SJHL added that the offer price represented a 19% premium on the 84p closing price of Newcastle's shares on Tuesday 22 May.

Any indication yet of how heavily he will invest in the club? Are we looking at a mini-Chelsea situation, or (more likely) Newcastle being able to spend £30-40m each year on transfers?

I guess Newcastle should be looking to be top 5 next season and closing the gap to the CL places with this new investment and a good new manager at the club.

Newcastle spend a lot every summer anyway, so I don't think there'll be much of a difference. tbh I think this investment will be more along the lines of developing the area around the stadium and other commercial aspects of the club. The footballing side has never really been short of money, just common sense.

So basically his company is the sponsor of Wigan...so Newcastle can pick and choose whatever players they like (example: Baines) and force Wigan to give up 6 points every year Laughing

But I bet the Premier League will find some or the other legal problem in this Erm

I don't think we'll become a sugar daddy club, he's doesn't seem to be the type to throw money around left right and center.
