It's a shame he's at Porto. I'd like to see him in Sporting's green.

If he continues like this, we'll use our option and buy him I think. A very important goal by him today again. ok

Porto will have to want to sell though, and I'm not sure they want to. Co was the guy that didn't want Almeida, but he also didn't want Diego...and well he's not at the club anymore.

I can't see Hugo being sold without getting another chance at playing with the club, but I could be wrong.

He is on a loan, but we have an option in the contract that allows us to buy him for roughly 4m EUR this summer. So if we want him, we will get him, provided that he wants to stay in Bremen himself, of course

By the looks of it, he will stay. Klaus Allofs, the guy responsible for the transfers in Bremen, just said in an interview that "Hugo does not need to look for a new home anytime soon". I think Hugo likes to stay in Bremen, too.

Yeah, it won't hurt Portuguese football at least, that's for sure. Thomas Schaaf is an excellent coach, he has great record of forming young players, and he seems to like Hugo a lot, plays him very often. Under him, I think Hugo will improve considerably over the next few years, become more clinical, and it can't hurt to get experience in a different, more physical league.

I can see Hugo becoming the striker the Portuguese national team misses these days, an out to out striker scoring all the chances created by your excellent wingers and midfielders, the last piece to the puzzle.

That's what I've been thinking, despite some people writing Hugo off.

He's big and strong, reminds me of Vieri. He's really the only one of his kind in the new generation. I think we should have some good partners for him up front too, so things should be interesting once he starts getting some games with the A team again.

Hugo Almeida again today! He showed a lot of courage and determination going into that challenge on Kahn. He looked hurt when he came off though, perhaps not I wasn't paying that much attention just then.

Too bad he didn't actually get the goal, but 3/4 of it was his.

An important point for Bremen, gotta keep the faith.

    LOL

You rock cooper, you really do! Ale

Other key players to watch out for: Frings ('secret' captain and leader of the pack, midfield), Wiese (our great goalie who has saved our arse umpteen times), our "twin towers" central defence Mertesacker and Naldo (both 6'6), Borowski and Baumann (both injured, miss them badly these days. Baumann is our captain (DMC), Borowski is a German international, can play anywhere in the midfield).

Then we have youngsters like Almeida (Portuguese, 22) and Hunt (German, his mother is English, 20) in the attack, the future. Deano seems to have a soft spot for the latter, he scored his first hattrick for us a week ago. Almeida scores the important goals.

Hugo is a tank, seriously. You need to have balls to go into a challenge like that indeed, especially against Kahn who is (still) built like bulldozer. He made Kahn look awful though, great effort, and the goal is 90% his (that's why our players gratulated him afterwards). I didn't notice the kiss, what was up with that?

Well, it can't get much worse than this, we really were lucky today. Our midfield is stretched thin, we have quite a few injuries to handle (e.g. Klose today), and we simply don't seem to get a rest. Our next match is on Wednesday against Vigo again (UEFA Cup), that's 3 matches in 6 days. No wonder that our players are tired and exhausted.

Now we just have to win our match against Vigo at home, or draw at least to go through. If that happens, our "judgement week" was a success.
Then we'll have a few less exhausting weeks, should help us in the battle for Bundesliga title.

It was a shame I didn't see the whole match, but I only saw about the last half-hour, enough to see the green-whites scoring though Wink

The kiss came after the goal. He crossed himself and then kissed his right forearm where he has a large tattoo of a gothic cross. I've seen him do it before.

I just can't get over the fact that Co actually sent Almeida and Diego away from Porto, to Germany - a league he no doubt considered to be better than ours - where they are now doing very well, with Diego the one he hated the most being a star Laughing

Bremen has been having a good spell the last couple of years, hopefully they can grab another title soon enough, maybe this year.

The first half was a footballing lesson by Bayern, the best half of the season for them. Especially Schweinsteiger was truly great, back to his normal form. So from a Werder perspective, you didn't miss much Very Happy

I actually love Co for that, he is my favourite Dutchie. Very Happy
Thanks for your support, hope that we get our act together soon, then we have a good chance indeed.

Now we have Owo back, we could, depending on his form in training, perhaps play with Owo as RB and Schulz as LB, so both Fritz and Wome could play in the midfield to give more support to our strikers.

Fritz is not in form though, he had an awful match against Bayern. But I actually like your idea, because we have so many injured midfielders, and both Jensen and Vranjes are just awful these days.

The problem is however that we'd play without a true DM, because Frings role for us is more of an "Antreiber" than an agressive defensive midfielder concentrating on protecting the back four, like he does for die Mannschaft. If Frings plays in the central midfield, he needs a partner who helps him out with defensive duties, or does the "Antreiber" part and drives the team forward like Ballack does for die Mannschaft. We can't expect him to do both equally well at the same time.

blutgraetsche wrote:Diego won't move away after one season, and our management will simply not let him either. If there is something I'm sure of in these turbulent times, then this.

Sure, of course big clubs like Juve are always tempting for players like Diego, not just for financial reasons, but he is just 22 years old, and knows that he has to learn a lot still. And that he needs to play as much as possible to grow as a player. At a big club like Juve, the pressure is always higher, let's not fool ourselves here. Traditionally, Juve is the most successful Italian club, so of course their fans, media, everyone will expect them to challenge for the title next year.

Diego has seen his buddy Robinho at Real, a rather drastic example for how things can go wrong if you move to a big club too early. Besides, it's not just Juve who are interested in him, after this season, most of the big clubs are. Diego knows this, he knows that this interest is only to get stronger if he continues to establish himself as a top player in the Bundesliga. He won't miss any opportunities by staying in Bremen for a few more seasons, on the contrary. His market value will only increase.

I think Diego would make an excellent Deco replacement. He has great vision and technique. And I feel that we would make a good club for him, firstly we play a similarish style to you and more importantly he can arrive with less pressure as Iniesta and Xavi are quality midifielders that hopefully will be able to help him out.

Thereby he wouldn't fall into the Robinho trap where all hopes are pinned on him.

Don't worry I don't want Deco to leave us any time soon either.. So ideally it would be in 2 or 3 years where we would need somebody to strengthen the creative side of the midfield. Does Diego work hard, tackle, track back etc?

Managed to catch the second half yesterday, good stuff and a great result especially given that in all honesty Bayern were probably the better team on the day. It really is game on for the Meisterschaft now, and wouldn't be too upset to see you and the Lederhosen taking charge now – especially given that for obvious personal reasons it's now auf geht's Bayern in the Champions League ( Crying or Very sad ).

Will try and catch the Vigo return game in midweek if I can. Is Klose's injury particularly serious?

    @Allez

Here's the newest from Werder with regard to Klose...

Sounds like a young Deco then.

Do you know what teams are trailing Diego?

No, Diego is a different type of player. Deco does the work you've mentioned, he directs a lot of his attention on defensive tasks, Diego tends to watch the team try and get the ball back. He isn't the guy that's going to get it for you, not like Deco.

He does work hard, but really only in offensive moves. He isn't affraid to call for the ball and push the team forward, but he's IMO nothing like Deco. That's the very reason he left Porto...
