arsenal's midfield is definitely their achilles heel

when comparing it to the other three and their previous midfield's of vieira, edu, pires , overmars, on form ljunberg it really does pale in comparison

That I would have to agree with. Although Carrick and Alonso seem to be getting lumped in as 'defensive' rather than 'creative' players and I'm not sure that's correct. And Chelsea are only ahead of us because Robben is better than Kewell - if he goes to Bayern in the summer it could all be different!

I think Chelsea's is stronger and would be better against the strong sides in England and Europe, as they have players to stop the other team playing and Cole and Robben are great outlets. Against teams that play not to loose, then uniteds is much better.

I definitely prefer our midfield, as if it clicks it would be just wonderful to watch. head to head I think Chelsea would come out on top, although Arsenal played them of the park with technical football, so you never know

TM is right - Anderson and Nani have proved nothing...we still don't know if they'll be the next Ronaldo or the next Kleberson.

But I guess it depends on what you want - movement, fluency, attack: Man. Utd.

Have to wait and see at the end of the season. All depends on how well Nani and Anderson perform for United. Will they turn out to be stars like Ronaldo (even though he didn't exactly star in his first season) or will they struggle in their first season (like Shevchenko and Ballack)?

Hargreaves should have no problem fitting in.

Like other people have said, Man Utds has the more flair on paper, and considering which of the players will actually play, and the style of football Man Utd usually play, they should be more exciting to watch. I am very excited about seeing Nani and Anderson for them next season. I really rate Cole, I like Robben and SWP and obviously it depends how Nani and Anderson adapt, but I think Man Utd are potentially significantly better in wide positions.

Defensively and for overall balance, Chelsea look better. Personally I dont rate Hargreaves at all, and compared to the likes of Essien and Mikel, and Makelele too, he doesnt have the strength or composure or ability on the ball. I wonder whether he will considerably improve Man Utds team and defence, especially if they do play an otherwise attacking formation.

Hargreaves is no Essien, but he should help us against the top sides, who have creative players and strong midfielders. Scholes and Carrick are great offensively, but they arent defensive midfielders.

Our formation will be just as attacking as it was this season and we didnt concede many goals with our first choice defense, so Hargreaves will be there to let the other players play, without having to worry too much about tracking back as much.

We dont need Hargreaves to play defense splitting passes, he is there to stop the opposition playing then he can give it to carrick/scholes to start the attacks.

Hargreaves will do just fine IMO. I don't see why he can't be as good as Essien in the Premiership, except he probably won't score too many goals.

I'd just point out in the overhyping of essien he only scored 2 goals in the EPL in his best ever season (I know he was playing in defence for some parts of it) but he really isn't the all-round midifelder he's made out to be. I reckon hargreaves could get 2 goals as well.

With "some parts of the season at CB" being half the season

He also played a good part at RB too.

He got 6 in all comps though. For us only Drogs, Lampard, Sheva, Kalou and Ballack scored more this season.

stats, 2006/07:

Essien = 54 games, 6 goals
Hargreaves = 15 games, 0 goals

Most of Essien's goals have some sort of class about them too:

The goal v Arsenal was undoubtedly his best goal in a Chelsea shirt.

The goal v Villa where he beat 2-3 Villa players in about 5 yards of space.

The goal v Werder Bremen was a very cool finish.

I can't believe Essien only scored twice in the Premiership. Just our luck that he was absolutely immense in both games against us.

Also, 6 goals is a good total for him considering he played in defence for much of the season. PLus, whilst he is a box-to-box midfielder, he isn't in the team for his goals. If he can get some, say 6-10 a season, then that is a fine contribution but his value comes from everything else he adds to Chelsea.

In 05/06 he only got 2 goals in all comps (both PL), so if he just adds a few more each year (which i certainly think he will next season) his contribution will be fine.

Besides, like I said in another thread, if Drogba, Sheva, Pizzarro, Lampard are chipping in with regular goals as well as Kalou, Joe Cole and Robben getting their share, I won't be fussed how many goals Essien gets. He's not in the team based on how many goals he scores after all.

I also believe Mikel will get a few next season, but not as many as the other 7.

How much did Carrick finish with ?

I know he scored in the League , FA Cup and European Cup

He needs to add more goals to his game , he can for sure get 10+ easily , if he gets into the more attacking positions

If he plays further forward next year, there is no reason after having his settling in season that he can't get around 10 goals.

Essien is a monster though and Cole, Robben and Ballack are also world class players. Mikel and Diarra are showing signs of going that way too

Are you sure that those players are world class? Cole isn't even a guaranteed starter in the England side, Robben is inconsistent. Ballack is arguable IMO. I'll begrudge you Essien, even though I am a big admirer of his.

Carrick has benefited well from having Paul Scholes alongside him , the goal against Sheffield United .. Paul Scholes would have scored a similar goal .. and his shooting from long range when he has space is first rate .. at the end of the day , he is a deep-laying playmaker , but adding goals to his game will just take him to the next level.

Hargreaves hits a decent free-kick too... I would expect him and Giggs to divvy up opportunities between them.

Exactly - Hargreaves should be taking them instead of Ronnie. He's only doing them because you need a right-footer in some positions.

I still maintain from long distance Ronaldo should take them, if he gets it on target it's so hard for the keeper to save it and can lead to a deflection then a goal like against Liverpool or Spurs.

It's from close range where you need finesse that he should leave them to Giggs or Hargreaves.
