But owner Roman Abramovich, and even certain other senior executives at Stamford Bridge, doubt that the squad is any stronger.

Last-season's big-money flops Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack have been plagued by injury problems - as well as lingering fears, that, having turned 30, their arrival in the Premiership was at least a couple of years too late.

And certainly Mourinho's close-season dealings seemed more intent on shoring up the squad's all-round strength than providing the added excitement Abramovich has craved.

Mourinho and Abramovich fell out over spending policies last term.

Now the Portuguese coach now seems to have paid for his lack of inspiration in dealing with the Premiership's deepest transfer pockets

It's strange, I always thought that Mourinho was on a limited budget because that was what Abramovich wanted, and so he was forced to sign the likes of Sidwell because of their (lack of) cost. Maybe Abramovich disagreed with him selling players like Robben in that case. I guess this story will rumble on for a few days, and we will have plenty of revelations from both Mourinho and Chelsea still to come.
