    The nominees are:

    1. Luiz Felipe Scolari
    2. Sven Goran Eriksson
    3. Guus Hiddink
    4. Louis Van Gaal
    5. Fabio Capello
    6. Marcelo Lippi
    7. Carlo Ancelotti
    8. Cesare Prandelli
    9. Luciano Spalletti
    10. Alex Ferguson
    11. Arsene Wenger
    12. Rafa Benitez
    13. Jose Mourinho
    14. Carlos Alberto Parreira
    15. Ottmar Hitzfeld
    16. Otto Rehhagel
    17. Frank Rijkaard
    18. Daniel Passarella
    19. Juande Ramos

I am not doing a poll, otherwise it will become "which club you support"!! So as usual, there is one rule, you cannot vote for your club's coach.

If I left anyone really good out, let me know.

    1. So who is currently the best manager in the world?

    2. If you had to replace the coach at your club, who is your first choice?

Well, the last line twists the question. Who is currently the best coach in the world - Spalletti IMO.

But who would I want to coach Barcelona instead of Rijkaard? Probably only Hiddink or Scolari from that list, but they wouldn't be first choices.

You should add Juande Ramos to the list.

    Guus Hiddink for Corinthians!!!!

I'd have him for Brazil too. But we never had a foreign coach, and I don't think we will ever have one.

I would take Van Gaal, that's not to say he's the best, but he does play great football. I think the BEST is probably Mourinho.

I've got to say there's alot of dull coaches on that list. Safety first types.

The original question was far better IMO. Asking who is the best coach is far too difficult a question to answer.

For the first question, I'd choose Spaletti or Hiddink

I choose him because he knows the Ajax philosophy inside out , infact he added to it. Hes a good coach and tactician , if the right personal are there he can employ his 4/3/3 style. Hes always got the balance of defence + attack right and his teams do play lovely football .. Alex Ferguson + Wenger are admirers (and they are not too bad)

IMO he is one of the best tacticians.

If you are answering the earlier question, then Prandelli will suit the Wenger strategy/approach more than Spalletti. If Wenger goes in the near future, Prandelli will be a very natural replacement.

The way Benitez brought on a right back in the last 10 minutes of the CL final when they were losing was a stroke of genius, it truly turned the tide. ok

    Good point.

In Italy, the usual way to refer to a coach/manager is "tactician" coz it is implied that that is his primary contribution. But a manager has a larger role. So I actually mean MANAGER not just a tactician.

i dont think there is a standout. If it wasn't for his dull football Jose could get it as his record is v impressive. Spaletti needs to win something (seria A) to even get close but i do like his roma team and his tactics are refreshing but losing 7-1 at utd wasn't that clever.
Could give it to Lippi. what other manager has both a WC winners medal and a CL one?

Zdenek Zeman?? A mediocre coach at best, tho he does have a tendency to attack and leave gaps in his defence!! Best known for fair play and allegations against Juve Wink

Zeman is hardly a tactician who can command a CL team!! In Serie B these days, I think. Hasn't done anything of note since his Roma days 10 years ago.

Arsene Wenger. Impressed and envious of what he's doing at Arsenal and although he's not the most successful or genial you cannot argue with the near instant success he had when joining the club, or the way he has developed the club, won full support of fans and board alike and taken Arsenal forward.

As for Rafa's successor, I'll go for Gary Johnson. Or Florent Sinema Pongolle.

    1) I 'd say ancelotti - his team( milan) are very nice to watch, current holders of the CL and have been the best team in that competition for the past few seasons.

Why are people choosing spalletti ahead of Wenger, Fergusson, rijkaard etc?

is it because his team plays good attacking football with no out an out strikers? well that not too dissimilar to the way we played in the CL in the 2005/2006 season

    1. So who is currently the best manager in the world?

Imo anyone of Lippi, Mourinho, Ferguson or Hiddink, though they're all very good managers in their own right.

Although having the best plaeyrs in the world doesn't mean you'll have the best team it definitely makes it easier for you. Best coaches for me take a supposedly weaker team and due to their coaching and tactics beat better teams on paper, wether in the league or CL. Hiddink, Wenger, Benitez, Mourinho etc all won things with weaker teams due to their coaching.

Spalletti's Roma play nice football but so far didn't win a great deal. Inter did that for several years with different coaches, just by having good players who could turn on the style, but were not good enough to beat the top teams due to bad tactics from the manager. Kevin Keegan's Newcastle also played great football, so who would like him to manage their club?
