how did chelsea's 4 centre midfielders work... surely they will not win trophies playing like this especially with fullbacks that don't really attack too well

When I say that games at this level frequently turn on moments of bad/good luck, tiny misjudgements or refereeing mistakes I get people passionately disagreeing with me. Chelsea were quite disjointed at times today but as the great one says (and Wenger agrees with him) it's not surprising when all these blasted internationals are stealing the clubs training time Mad

I agree, its difficult to get new signings settled in immediately when they have to play internationals straight after the transfer window closes.
I think it will take Chelsea quite a while to get into a settled style of play because they are trying to accommodate four central midfielders and it will take some time for them to figure out how to play with them effectively.

Diego was pretty useless today. I know he's a talented player and I've heard that he's made a really good start to his Werder Bremen career, but tonight he was dissapointing. He created precisely zero. He obviously has nice technique and is comfortable on the ball, but he didn't thread a single ball through the Chelsea defence. His ball retention was decent but his passes were exclusively lateral and umimaginative. I expected more from him. I'm sure he's capable of more.

Two weeks left for Mertesacker to regain fitness. Hope he'll play against Barcelona at home. Only then do we have a realistic chance to achieve anything in that match, and in this group.

Fortunately, Wiese should be back by then.

Good start, good performance, no injuries, lots of goals (from 5 diff. scorers), high confidence. Chelsea only scored from a penalty and a mistake, but they must have played well and Werder are harder than Sofia anyway. All in all a good day.

No point in getting angry about a (very dodgy) decision by the ref. We had our chances in the match, we didn't use them, while Chelsea did, simple as that.

Despite the defeat, I'm not that pessimistic about our chances to advance from this group now. It still will be very difficult to do so, but knowing that our team lacks form these days, and the injuries we had to deal with, we did ok, better than expected at least.

Once Mertesacker is fit and fully integrated, and our key players regain their usual form, we'll make life very hard for our opponents. It all depends on when this happens, the sooner the better. But even if we don't make it out of this tough group, I think that we will have a good chance to win the UEFA cup.

P.S.: This is the third time in a row that Werder lost the first CL match 2-0, and in both years so far, Werder managed to advance from the group stages.

"I have 100% confidence in Lampard but I said if the next penalty was crucial, it's better for another player to take it.

"If the next one comes where Lampard is cool he will take it again."

Mourinho added: "People remember Lampard missing a penalty against Charlton but I remember him scoring more than 10 penalties for us."

Does this make sense? Hey Frank, you can only take penalties when there's no pressure?

Yes, just so Lampard's resale value stock doesn't drop too much. And some kind of attempt to cover the fact that Lampard's falling out of favour with the manager. I doubt its some confidence boost like Jose is attempting to say.

Mourinho also hit out at the referee's decision to show four yellow cards to his players in the second half and hinted that there may be a conspiracy against his team.

He said: "The reality is that if you look at Barcelona tonight they had no yellow cards, Bayern Munich had no yellow card, Liverpool had no yellow card, Valencia had no yellow cards, Roma had no yellow cards but Chelsea have four. Do you think it is violence?"

    more from jose

Jose Mourinho temporarily took away Chelsea's penalty-taking responsibility from Frank Lampard last night - and then launched a fierce attack on the England midfielder's critics.
"Something is happening with the English press in relation to Frank Lampard," he said. "He is guilty because you have never had a player like him in the last 10 years. He is guilty because he scores so many goals and plays so many matches for Chelsea and England with 100% effort in every game. I think you should respect him a bit more - I'm angry about the way you treat Frank Lampard."

nope jose... he is guilty because he is currently as useful as an england shirt in otto's house
