Post by mongrel hawk Sun Feb 10, 2008 5:05 pm

My brother went to a Barcelona game the other week and said he was very disappointed with the fans.

He said the atmosphere in football games in Spain are Cr@p, you can hear the players talking. He said people watch the game as if they were in a cinema theatre. Shocked

Then he went to a Stuttgart game in Germany. He said it was much better, but still not as thrilling as in Brazil.

And he supports São Paulo, which has probably the crapiest fanbase in Brazil.

By what I see on TV, English football games have the best atmosphere, and the Turkish too

Barcelona & Real Madrid games tend to be like that. He should try going to a Sevilla, Betis, Cadiz or Athletic game, they have much better atmosphere.

For the best atmosphere in Spain you have to head south.. as for the rest of Europe: Italy, France, Turkey, Greece probably have the best atmosphere.

A Barcelona spectator spends most of his time complaining about the team to the person next to him. Grudgingly clapping a bit if Barcelona scores.

    scratch

South as in Andalucia.. not Southern Europe

Germany definitely has a much better atmosphere than what we see in most Spanish stadiums, but you can't really match Turkey/Greece for hysteria. Mind you I have only been to one game in Germany.. the rest I have seen on tv..

But calling me ignorant/racist just because I don't praise your beloved Bundesliga is a bit over the top..

I know where is England? scratch

I think Turkey for sure have the best atmosphere, Besiktas was just incredible. Barca atmosphere is always rubbish, though Sevilla do have a very good atmosphere on some occasions.

I think Argentinian are awesome myself. Went to a Boca game out there, and the stadium was literally rocking. I can't imagine how crazy it'd have been if it was Boca-River.

France is not terrible, except at Marseille where the fans are boiling hot. The worst is Monaco and Auxerre, boring and boring.

Not really a surprise. I think everyone except your brother knows that the atmosphere at the Camp Nou is rubbish.

One of the reasons that I stopped to follow the Liga so closely was the fans, I just think they are awful, like it was said in LA Liga Loca column this week, if the team plays bad they boo them, if they score tons of goals and the match is already in the bag they leave early. They only care if is a game aginst their rival, and I sense it has nothing to do with the football, but for others things. Not to mention the ridiculous war between Madrid and Barcelona press.

Sometimes I think that both supporters only care about be regarded in the media as the best team in the world, they don’t care about football really.

A lot of what is said about barcelona applies to milan and inter as well in the san siro. It is only really good against their main rivals, or on special occasions (such as CL, the derby etc).

I said in another thread a lot of this is down to a lack of imagination from the so-called fan-leaders who are supposed to lead the chants etc. They really are rubbish. That's why they have flares (except for the CL of course). Most of the time the away fans from smaller clubs make more noise and create the atmosphere.

Also the size of the stadium affects the atmosphere and against the smaller clubs it is not full and therefore there isn't this swelling of noise that happens when it is full.

The other thing that happens at the san siro is that the fans complain all the time (instead of cheering), usually about players they dislike such as seedorf and when he does something good like score or create a goal, they grumble about how it was made by a pass from pirlo or kaka, or how pirlo or kaka could have done it better. But sometimes it really is louder when 20 thousand people suddenly shout at someone who's made a bad pass than cheering when a goal is scored.
