Yeh i guess. The centre back and striker position were the 2 positions you didn't want to have any injuries for. Every other position has good backups (apart from maybe De Rossi).

    What's happened to Andreolli btw?

CL Debate: Roma & Man Utd – Key Battles
Ahead of tonight’s Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Stadio Olimpico, Carlo Garganese looks at a few of the key personal battles that could decide the tie…

Cristiano Ronaldo Vs Daniele De Rossi

During last season’s quarter final when they were humiliated 7-1 at Old Trafford, Roma were simply torn apart by Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese winger was offered too much space, and was not marked closely enough in both legs. Roma surely won’t be so naïve this time around, and I strongly suspect that Daniele De Rossi may be employed as a kind of man-marker on Ronaldo. The Italian, has carried out this duty on a number of occasions in the past, and I remember him completely neutralising the brilliant Franck Ribery when Italy played France in a Euro 2008 qualifier last September. If De Rossi can do the same to Ronaldo then Roma have a chance, if he does not, then Man Utd will surely be even stronger favourites to go through.

    Wayne Rooney Vs Philippe Mexes

Rooney proved that he is in excellent from during the weekend win over Aston Villa, and is rated by most of the Roma team as Manchester United’s best player. Like Ronaldo, Rooney was unstoppable against the Giallorossi last season, and he scored the away goal in the Stadio Olimpico in United’s 2-1 first leg defeat. French defender Philippe Mexes will be handed the job of shackling the England centre forward. Mexes has been undoubtedly the top centre back in Serie A in 2008, and was a rock at during the win over Real Madrid in the last round. However he has a susceptible temperament which has been known to explode in the past.

    Mirko Vucinic Vs Rio Ferdinand

Roma’s chances of progressing to the semi-finals were dealt a huge blow when their talismanic captain Francesco Totti was ruled out with a thigh injury. James Richardson, the former Football Italia presenting cult hero on Channel 4, once said that “Roma are like Channel 5 – without the Totti they are nothing.” This was a light-hearted reference to Channel 5’s regular showings of softcore movies, with ‘Totti’ a slang word in English for ‘ladies’. Whether Richardson is correct will be put to the test tonight. Totti’s replacement will be Mirko Vucinic, who has impressed in the Champions League this season, scoring four times. He has been in fine form over the past weeks, scoring winners against Real Madrid and Milan, and Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson is rumoured to be preparing a summer transfer bid for him. The hitman will be marked by Rio Ferdinand, who has also been in imperious mood in recent weeks, even being named England captain against France last Wednesday. Ferdinand’s partnership with Nemanja Vidic is one of the best in Europe, but they could be in for a tough evening against the Montenegrin.

    Amantino Mancini Vs Wes Brown

Wes Brown is undoubtedly Man Utd’s weak link, and if he plays at right back, you can bet your bottom dollar that Roma coach Luciano Spalletti will be instructing Mancini to run at Brown every time he gets the ball. Mancini has the beating of the 28-year-old, the only question is if he can isolate him in a situation where the likes of Ferdinand and Vidic cannot come to the rescue. Mancini has been accused of inconsistency, although like many of his Roma team-mates he has been in wonderful form over the past month or so, and scored an excellent winner in the first leg against Real Madrid in the last round.

The kid got a long term injury in the begining of the season from what I remember... I think he is fit now, but this is hardly the kind of game to send in a youngster at CB!!

Ferrari reminds me of Wes Brown, almost as bad! Panucci is terrible at CB, but he will probably be better than Ferrari!

But Perrotta has been pretty Cr@p this season, though i agree that he would useful since he tracks back a lot.

Ferrari is still living off the reputation he gained from his 03/04 season at Parma! Looks like he is going to be Milan's main purchase this summer!

Never liked Panucci. His man marking skills are terrible!

Anticipation and aprehension, at the same time. And the aprehension keeps growing.

Most Italians I know did not give Roma much hope over the 2 legs to start with, but now without Totti, Perrotta, and Juan, even the first leg looks like a big ask. For Roma, thats the equivalent of being without Ronaldo, Tevez and Vidic.

Usually, I prefer Aquilani over Perrotta... but in games like these, Perrotta would be more effective due to his experience, physicality, and defensive ability to do the dirty work. Specially a big blow in conjunction with Totti, coz Vucinic tends to stay further upfront than Totti, so with Totti playing Perrotta would have enjoyed going back more, thus crowding the midfield for ManU making it very difficult to play that pacy counter-attackin football that they excel in. Now with Vucinic and Aquilani, I suspect ManU will find it much easier on the break to trouble Roma...

I hear rumours that a large proportion of Geordies are opting not to renew their passports, as they see no point in owning one. Is this true?

Playing Scholes & Giggs in these games is becoming a bit of a no-no now. It's ok to play one of them but both leaves alot more running for the rest of the team.

Maybe Anderson instead of Scholes, or more preferable for me Tevez instead of Giggs.

wise heads and all that, i think saf wont want them running around too much anyway. keep it tight try to sneak a goal. different in the epl but an away european match to italians is v different imho.

Whats the news on Carrick? If he's out it will be either

    -------------------Vds--------------------------

    ----Brown-------Rio---Vidic-----Evra

    -----Ronaldo---Anderson--Hargreaves--Giggs

    ---------------Rooney---Tevez

    or

    ---------------Vds--------------------

    ---Brown-----Rio----Vidic----Evra

    ----------Scholes--Hargreaves--Anderson

    ----------Ronaldo--Rooney---Tevez/Giggs

Cant see anything other than those.

To be honest i think Scholes is going to play after he did the interviews but prefer he didn't away from home. Anderson is a must he wont go missing and has a lot of energy, and can make that counter attacking pass to set the holy trinity away.

Well i don't know. But Fergie wasnt postive on him being fit. and he sat out training yesterday so probably.....

@DS not really for this game, more looking forward to it. A bad result would ruin everyday until the return leg Smile

    And like i said, 4-1. <Ale>

Like I said, Silverware; although I will forgive you for not being familiar with the term. You can google the definition if it helps <Ale>

I just did, then i searched "meaningless trophies" and it said "Did you mean the carling Cup?". Confounded. scratch

I just checked too, and it linked me to a map of Europe. You sure you're using the correct search engine? scratch

That map should come in useful, maybe next time you won't turn off the road at the earliest exit possible. <Ale>
