Well..there's Downing, Etherington(dunno if he's fit)..Matt Taylor..Young plays on the left..Barry can play on the left.

Downing is just in the best form he's been in for ages thats all. Actually deserves the call up this time.

It defies any logic: Carrick performing well in recent months for the English Champions .. can’t even make this England team and many criticise the ‘Top 4’ teams having no English players to choose from. Well good luck to Capello, sooner or later like McClown he will be calling a Redblood for help !

Carrick has had a better season than Owen H to be fair and both have had their fair shares of injures, but England needs a DM more than a DLP.. Especially when you have both or one of Gerrard & Lampard starting.

For a friendly? No. Since it doesn't really mean sh*t long term. Curtis Davies was in his last squad after all.

Downing is in there because collectively, there are about 13 people in England who are left footed. That includes women and children below the age of 5 ok

There is a plethora (good word) of central midfielders to choose from. Whether its Carrick or Barry for example is down to personal opinion. Capello clearly fancies Gareth more. Maybe its his optimised thighs, or his dark mediterrenean features. Who knows.

The crucial fact, my carrot topped friend, is that there is no one remotely half decent who is left footed. Young could play there, maybe Etherington. That's it. So Downing is a shoe in at every squad.

Fair play to Wheater though. He'll keep his place until the next time King is half fit <Ale>

Is it likely King will ever be fit enough to play for England again? I thought this knee problem he had meant he could only ever play a couple of games then miss a couple of games.

I dont expect Wheater to actually feature to be honest..just good to see him get some more recognition.

Downing did actually deserves his call up this time, he usually doesnt. He'll still probably be $h!t if he takes part though..but at least he'll be there Razz

He does look somewhat like Vidic yeah..I think I saw him described somewhere as a cross between Dowie and Vidic.

I think it'd be a close fight..I think Wheater could take a punch better. He looks like he's taken more punches anyway.

good to see gabby's got another chance, after injury robbed him of possible debut last time. hasn't been in great form of late, but should still be ahead of Crouch, Owen or Walcott ok

be interesting to see if Glen Johnson does any good at right back - he's got a chance to stake a claim, 'cause there ain't much competition with Richards injured (and everyone thinks he's a cb longterm)

what's the point of this name 30 then cut it down to 23 a few days later thing? is he expecting half a dozen injuries at the weekend, or is it just to give as many players as possible a shout-out, without actually having to play them?

i guess it's a nice boost for a player to know he's near the squad (did the same with Curtis Davies last time) but it just seems a bit cruel - 'you're in the squad for the first time' -2 days later 'ooh but you miss out on the cut'
