I forgot about my avatar Glenn, doesnt Liverpool has a Argentine player? I actually thought that Aimar was going to Liverpool since Benitez is there.
aren't you from Brazil?
I'd love Aimar, but it's probably too late
Can we add Paletta? heard he was the next Ayala but turned out to be the next Pelegrini

Do you mean health or wealth? Never seemed the greedy type. Valencia won La Liga twice under Benitez and UEFA Cup as well. Aimar was important player in both of those wins. He was sold for just €5m to Zaragoza by Carboni, apparrently against the wishes of Quique Sanchez Flores.

in the Aimar catagory. Maybe made the wrong move, maybe moved too late. Was a great player who got bored and went home.
hmmmmm i imagine he got a lot of hype
So verdict OVERATED
Never hit the heights never hit the heights.
I'd put him in the Gascoigne category, bit like Waddle or Platt in career terms. Mido-esque. He was an awesome player but completely mental. Give Rooney too much pace and 4 Stellas and you've got Ortega. I'm sure Fergie could have sorted him out

Cant quite recall what happenend in 02, but i remember in 98 he butted VDS only for Bergkamp to score a few minutes later.
That year i hated Argentinia after Simone and Beckham Simone was a super c**t. Bergkamp's goal could have been a goal in a cl final for manu, it was great
I get so emotional, I watched that game against Holland, he scandalously dived and tried to get a penalty, so VDS got mad at him, then he head betted VDS and got sent off. We in Brasil always watch every single Argentina game in WC, just to see the moment that they get eliminated.
WE say that WC has two special moments, one when Brasil wins and the other when Argentina gets sent off. Both makes me cry. (please don’t kill me Barrilete, you know you hate us too)

well the current Ayala didn't come good until he was 25 so Paletta still has time. Bump this thread in 4 years if he doesn't

I always found these overrated Argies were pretty useful in Championship Manager. Part of the reason they were overrated was because they were so good on games like these. Remember Cavenaghi? he used to get me 30+ goals a season yet all see that he is just an average striker now.
Cavenaghi and Cisse were awesome for me in the 2004 game, you could get Cavenaghi, Robinho, Diego and some change for a shilling. Even better was the early games when Maradona and Gascoigne retired they came back as 16 year olds. Oh the spooge.
Indeed. Kevin Hofland and Riquelme in the 2002 game were awesome. (Riquelme's ability always went up to about 190). Gallardo and Montenegro in 1999 (there's another 2 for your list though it would perhaps be a bit harsh to put Gallardo in there).

He scored a brace against Jamaica, and suddenly he's the new Maradona? From what i saw of him in Serie A, he always dissapointed me. He had good dribbling skills but that was pretty much it. Too weak and too greedy with the ball. Was always a good buy in championship manager though

Re: BOY that ARGIE was overated thread!
@Coop
sorry man but how on earth did marinelli ever had to cope with the new Maradona label(which by the way is more freely given away by european media than by ours)???i don't think there was any coach that actually rated him bar the naive boro youth managers...Still, thanks for the money
@at the rest of you
Aimar was huge for Benitez's Valencia. Voted most influential player for the team in the season triumphs by the fans back then
His only problem was that his physique which never allowed him to fully develop as a player. Even with the games that his body let him play he still oozed class in every ball he touched. He(or she) who says otherwise has never actually seen him play for more than two games.
I seriously doubt anyone every rated Palermo the next Maradona, the guy could loose the ball between his legs(I think it has happened before) all by himself, yet he has scored so many goals it's unbelievable...not to mention to one of your beloved keepers Casillas

I dont think he ever did cope with it..he was good though. He performed well when he did actually play..he was just too greedy at times and was far too arrogant for a young player who hadnt made it. There were times when he was given instructions and he just looked disgusted and shrugged his shoulders as if to say "Im Marinelli, who are you to tell me what to do?"...I think if the coaches at the club had been able to deal with that he would've been good. Gascoigne rated him(I know being rated by a mental case might not be great but still..)he said he was the only player he'd pay to watch at Middlesbrough. Usually created alot when he played..could beat men, could score goals..just the attitude problem.

I think that this is pretty much what people here are saying about him Barrilete, he was great in his early career in Valencia, but his health didn’t help him and he started to struggle.
Also is important to point out that he never really got a chance at you National Team, I always felt that he was badly used there.
