When Rooney lost the ball it was because he'd been impeded. We'll have to see if a video appears but I'm utterly sure he was fouled.
of all the questionable decisions, Scholes not getting a red card was, to me, the clearest 'mistake'.
To me it was barely even a foul - the player wasn't in clear control of the ball, having pushed it far beyond him, and the challenge was shoulder to shoulder. Given that the player wasn't clearly advancing into a goalscoring or goalcreating position I don't see why it should have to be a yellow card and hence a red.
The pen for Man Utd was right, I thought. Although it was a slightly unusual one, the Wigan player took out the player before he got to the ball (and probably meant to).
There was another more than reasonable shout for a penalty in the second half on Rooney close to the byline. The Reading player clearly hacked him down. You could argue that Rooney was going nowhere and hence not a denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity.
The Rio penalty...I wasn't sure. It was upper arm/shoulder. Could have been given, but would've been a v soft penalty if it was.
Curiously, I think this was the worst decision. From the camera behind the goal you can clearly see Ferdinand move as the ball comes through the air towards him. Now, he was *probably* trying to get his chest behind it, but he moved to the ball and it struck him on the arm and this stopped it being a goalbound shot.
As clear a penalty as the day offered, in my opinion.
There was an incident where a freekick was given to Wigan in their area, causing Rooney to shout all sorts of nonsense at the referee, earning him a deserved booking. But the replay of the incident showed that while the ball had struck Rooney's arm, it had also struck the defender's arm, who at one moment pulled Rooney back as he was trying to shoot.
So while Wigan should have had one penalty (stonewall), Man U should have had two or possibly three. If the referee was being generous towards them. He had the excuse to give two more. He didn't.
Talk of the referee handing this game to Man U is, in my opinion, ludicrous.
