That's true. But to be fair, Spanish reporters tend to repeatedly ask the players about potential signings. They do the same to Madrid players. They keep asking "So what do you think about the prospect of playing for X player? Do you think he would make a difference in the team?", etc. So the players try to be cordial and give the predictable "I would love to play with him" and so on.

The best was a few years ago, when the Beckham saga really grew toward the end of the season when La Liga was being decided. The reporters were more focused on whether Beckham was coming than with reporting the final stage of the league, which we were disputing with Real Sociedad.

At one point a reporter asked Guti, "so what do you think about the prospect of playing with Beckham?", and Guti just gave him a mean look and grabbed his (his own, not the reporters' Wink ) balls or something like that. Classic Guti <Ale>

    Ronaldo future remains uncertain

The future of Cristiano Ronaldo was still unclear after Manchester United's Champions League triumph over Chelsea. in Moscow.

Winger Ronaldo, 23, has been repeatedly linked with a move to Real Madrid but United have insisted he is staying put.

Asked after the match where his future lay, Ronaldo told BBC TV: "I stay."

However, the Portuguese star then told Radio 5 Live: "I don't promise nothing. I don't promise nothing to my mum, I don't promise nothing to supporters."

He added: "I want to stay but the future - no-one knows. I want to stay. We are going to see in the next two weeks, I don't say I make a decision."

Ronaldo scored the opening goal in Wednesday's final against Chelsea but missed in the penalty shoot-out, before goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar won the trophy with a save from Nicolas Anelka.

Reports in the Spanish press have repeatedly claimed that the Portuguese international will be heading to Real Madrid in the summer.

But Manchester United have been adamant that the player will see out the contract he signed last year, which ties him to Old Trafford until 2012.

Speaking on Tuesday, Manchester United chief executive David Gill told BBC Radio 5 Live: "He's got four more years with us and we're sure he'll be with us for many years."

And asked whether Ronaldo would stay, manager Sir Alex Ferguson added: "If you want to put a bet on it, I'll put a big bet on it."

Can someone please explain what image rights actually include. I always for no apparent reason thought it was a percentage of the profits from shirts sales with the players name and other merchandise bearing the particular players name/face?

Basically it means the club gets a certain percentage of the players' external sponsorship contract. The only way the Galactico era was sustainable at Madrid was because of this...imagine Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo, Beckham, etc. paying 50% of their millions from Pepsi, Adidas, Nike, Gillette...all to Madrid.

(obviously it's not that simple but I believe that's the principle)

Kas its more to do with what shaz says in normal circumstances, although madriz was anything but normal during that period.

It's actually amazingly common these days as its also seen as a tax dodge. instead of getting all their money as wages some of it is attributed to image rights (ie the ability of the club to use your image for internal advertising etc.), this way the player sets up a company to manage his own image rights and then numerous expenses are set off to this company limiting tax. In the MAdrid scenario they actually did what you said but this was to pay the players extortinate amounts in salary and transfer fees, thus the players forego some of their own image rights used on external sponsorship deals but also remove the risk of losing some and the club is essentially part appointed as their agent so that the club can maximise their own profits.

Steve Bruce had to pay back a sum to Birmingham cos of the first scenario as these payments tend to be 6 montjly payments, although can be for any period.

Can't see Man. Utd. agreeing by offering them Diarra or Robinho. S. Ramos is the only one they might like, but that makes this rumour unfeasible in itself because it would be hugely unpopular with fans and his fellow players.

And 50m plus Ramos, Robinho, and Diarra would be valuing Ronaldo at well over 100m euros Yikes

In summary, I think this particular package deal rumour is one for the "Utterly Stupid Rumours" thread.

@ The marca-tavern do you believe any of these articles btw?

I'd love Ramos here, Ramos, Cassilas and 50 mill(sterling baby) and we have a deal Ramong. Robinho is not strong enough for the premiership. Diarra we apparently wanted two years ago thank goodness it didn't happen. Now Hargreaves is here no need for him at all.

This interview sounds more like the stuff ive seen him say on t.v. No mention of any 2 weeks either.

The Portugal star has been persistently linked with Real Madrid by the Spanish media and has not helped quell the speculation by announcing he would make a decision on his future shortly.

In an interview with Portuguese newspaper Publico, the 23-year-old confirmed he would like to play in Spain one day but that he is currently satisfied with life in England.

"There is nothing certain at the moment," Ronaldo said. "The press always make stories about interest from other teams, not only from Madrid, also from Barcelona.

"On one hand it's good and means that they know your value as a player and think you can be a good reinforcement for other teams.

"But my head is in Manchester because it is the club that, at the moment, puts me in the best condition and that I'm happy at.

"Now, as I have said many times, only God knows the future.

"I have never hid from anyone that I would like to play in Spain one day. It's a dream, but sometimes dreams don't happen.

"I can guarantee that I am happy at Manchester United and that I would love to continue."

In more detail....and i think this really puts the idea of him leaving out the window.

speculation about you leaving Manchester to go to Spain. Is there some truth in this?

Nothing. The Press always writes about the interest of some teams - not only of Madrid, but also Barcelona. On one side it's nice to be known and that they value you as a footballer and consider you a good reinforcement for other teams. But my head is in Manchester. Because, at the moment, it's the club that gives me the best environment, and where I'm doing well. But as I said several times, the future belongs only to God. I've never hidden that someday I would like to play in Spain. It's a dream, but sometimes dreams do not become reality. I can assure you that I am happy at Manchester and I want to continue.

    How's working with Alex Ferguson?

It's spectacular. He's a very experienced coach and has helped me a lot. But I've also had the support of Carlos Queiroz, who also does a spectacular job. He's helped me a lot and has a key role. He directs the training and is with the players every day and is an excellent professional. Five stars - as a coach and as a person.

Ferguson is known for his anger - he's got the nickname hairdrier for the way he shouts to players. Already having experienced it?

(Laughs) I've been with him five years and know him well. He's a very experienced coach and has always helped me. That's the important thing.

What are the differences between soccer in England and Portugal?

In England, football is special. We want it to be a spectacle and we all have an obligation to contribute to the spectacle. The stadiums are always full and the people always encourage you. The game is faster and the players are stronger.

Are you the best player in the world?

That is always relative. There are things I do well. I scored more goals than I expected. As a team, Manchester are champions of the League and the Champions - an objective achieved after a long time. It's been a great season for me.

What is the secret of your development?

Being in a big club has helped me progress as a person and professionally. That made it all easier.

It was Golden Boot with 42 goals, that's a lot.

I'm not a real attacker, but I try to improve my individual success. The goals will not help if our team isn't performing. My goals reflect the great era of Manchester.

Some say that Cristiano has surpassed the prestige of other 7s like Best, Robson, Cantona and Beckham.

I'm privileged. I am in a great group of players and I am honored to wear this shirt..... It goes on but he again expresses his desire to stay.

It's in AS i doubt Marca will run with it.

As has been pointed out before, I believe that release clauses are not usual in English player contracts, and in any case £70m would be a low number for Ronaldo. So I think it's bollocks.

Bernd Schuster has risked antagonising Sir Alex Ferguson by claiming Cristiano Ronaldo will be a "spectacular signing" for Real Madrid.

Manchester United manager Ferguson reacted with fury last week after coach Schuster and president Ramon Calderon went public with their admiration for the Portugal international, accusing the Spanish champions of lacking morals.

Ronaldo attempted to diffuse the situation by revealing he was happy with the Double winners, but Schuster, who has likened the 23-year-old's potential impact in Spain to that of David Beckham, has again fanned the flames.

The German says the 42-goal flyer is his number one transfer target and is intent on bringing him to the Bernabeu.

"I have paid much attention to the player, to how he speaks, how he appears on the field and I have enough opinions that people who know him have contributed to me," Schuster told As.

"As a footballer, we do not have to waste time speaking of his quality. Most important was to evaluate him personally and as a professional and I must say Cristiano Ronaldo has his head straight.

"The situation is complicated for a lad of his age but it hasn't affected his form as you saw at the end of the season with Manchester.

"In this Madrid, the lad would create no problems. I see only one conflict for him - the media explosion. For the fans, it is going to be a spectacular signing like what seemed to happen with David Beckham.

"This is not England and that change will affect him. It is necessary to be intelligent to solve the problems for the boy.

"Ronaldo will be expensive and it'll be necessary to pay a lot of money but we need more because he would not be sufficient.

"It seems that everything has been stopped just a little bit due to Cristiano Ronaldo being the big priority of the club now. But we follow the market, by all means.

    Dear oh dear oh dear.

Btw wonder what Otto makes of his words.

Oh and Man Utd are going to report Real Madrid to Fifa i just saw on SSN.

Manchester United could report Real Madrid to FIFA

Ale Burn Los Burros and their German coach

Manchester United has issued the following statement regarding Cristiano Ronaldo's future:

Manchester United has watched with growing irritation the comments attributed to Real Madrid over their alleged desire to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. The facts are:

The player is on a long-term contract and his registration is held by Manchester United The player is not for sale.

The Club will have no alternative but to report Real Madrid to the world governing body, FIFA, if it continues to behave in this totally unacceptable fashion. These public attempts to unsettle the player are completely against the regulations and the Club will not tolerate them any longer.

In addition, the Club is certain that they are a distraction for the Portuguese national squad as they prepare for the European Championships. No-one should be in any doubt that Manchester United will do everything in its power to keep its best players.

Why do you not want this to happen ?

Real blowing their entire transfer budget for two seasons on a player who isn't half as good as they think he is

Barca fans are in a win win situation here Wink

They did the same with Kaka. Kaka has a better head on his shoulders than Ronaldo does, but Milan also threatened to report them to FIFA.

However, if I look at it with some equanimity, they are not doing anything much wrong here, even if it is crass. Ronaldo is also not a baby: he knows that all he has to do is hand in his transfer request. Such is football. The thing is we've to separate what Marca and AS say from what Real say.

It's all very simple and none of this other stuff really figures into it: if Ronaldo wants to stay, he will. If not then he will go to Real.
