Team of the season
By Gavin Brown - Friday, May 23, 2008
Losing is no fun, ask John Terry. So, in order to ensure no one goes home empty-handed it's time for my Premier League team of the year. The only rule is players who have picked up a trophy need not apply.
Chris Kirkland: For years it seemed the longer Kirkland was injured the higher his stock rose. He's now proved his worth on the pitch, despite appearing to have a coathanger in his shirt.
Bacary Sagna: Daft hair, mighty talent. The Arsenal right-back is the latest in a long line of rampaging full-backs groomed by Arsene Wenger.
Skrtel
Martin Skrtel: Only arrived at Liverpool in January but quickly made up for lost time, tackling anything that moves. If there's a Mrs Skrtel she probably has to wear shinpads to bed.
Ricardo Carvalho: John Terry may be brave but his Portuguese mate is the brains and pace of the Blues defence.
Joleon Lescott: Doesn't like left-back but happy to take one for the team. Scored more goals than any other defender.
David Bentley
David Bentley: A consistent season for Blackburn has seen him overtake David Beckham in the race to fill David Beckham's boots. Almost as good as he thinks he is.
Mathieu Flamini: A year ago Arsenal were searching for a midfield enforcer and found one under their nose. They're now wondering how he got away.
Javier Mascherano: Great player, great song.
Ashley Young: English and talented. Needs to steer clear of the front pages, though.
Fernando Torres
Fernando Torres: What does £20million buy you nowadays? Er, quite a lot to be fair. Pace, skill and goals by the Kop-load for starters.
Roque Santa Cruz: Always a good player at Bayern Munich but always injured too. Fully fit, he showed his true class this season.
SUBS – Jimmy Bullard: No one saved Fulham single-handedly but everyone's favourite angler did more than most.
Kenwyne Jones: So good Roy Keane bought him despite the fact he's never played for Manchester Utd or Ireland. Needs more goals.
MANAGER – Roy Hodgson: 'Uncle Roy' kept Fulham up in style despite looking like an affable regional sales manager for a garden shed manufacturer.
