Arsenal aside, we are the smallest big club in Europe.
Even if we did sign him where would he play? How do you accommodate Gerrard, Torres, Villa and Kuyt in the same side? Because Kuyt will always always start.
We'll always be first choice for the likes of Barry, Downing, Bentley and co because the likes of Chelsea, Inter and Barcelona aren't going to be in for them. Villa is another matter, other sides can offer him more and pay more for him.
If talks do happen, hopefully we can drill home the whole Liverpool = Spain factor plus obvious other factors such as challanging for the league and Europe.

Benitez targets Spain star Villa
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez admits David Villa is on his list of potential striker recruits after Peter Crouch's impending departure to Portsmouth.
Villa, 26, was one of the stars of Euro 2008, scoring four times as Spain won their first major trophy in 44 years.
"We have Torres, Voronin, Kuyt, Babel and Steven Gerrard, who can play as a second striker," Benitez said. "But we will try to bring in another option.
"Villa we know all about. He is on our list. But maybe it will be difficult."
Torres scored 33 goals in a spectacular first season at Anfield, but the relative lack of goals from the club's other forwards again undermined any hopes of launching a sustained Premier League title challenge.
Crouch, Kuyt, Babel and Voronin only scored a combined total of 17 league goals, with the team again heavily reliant on Gerrard's goals from midfield.
Villa scored 18 league goals for Valencia last season and was the top scorer at Euro 2008, notably scoring a hat-trick against Russia in a Group D match.
And he also proved he could form an effective partnership with Torres, despite pre- tournament concerns that Spanish coach Luis Aragones would be forced to leave one out in order to select a balanced team.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/7496686.stm
I wonder which "list" Benitez is referring to...his wishlist (where Villa would be top) or his "realistic list" in which case Villa is probably close to the bottom.

Re: Liverpool Football Club 08/09
On top of all the other stuff about strikers at liverpool, Kuyt had his father pass away did he not who he was very close to, and during that time understandably had a pretty poor season, but towards the end was playing pretty well and carried that into the euros.
I think kuyt will have a great season, including several MOTMs
Babel is young, playing on the wing and in his first season, he was also getting better towards the end of the season, so he should be better as well, assuming he doesn't get SSS.
Liverpool could do with another striker/attacking winger not because thier first choices are bad, but to avoid having to play voronin (they should send him on loan back to the bundesliga or something). They have lost the height option with crouch leaving so if I were them I'd get a tall guy who is good in the air and strong enough to hold up play.

How do you think this team would do against the current Liverpool team, would it get raped?
Players signed and sold by Rafa between 2004 and 2008. Might be sold this summer?
Which players can you see being sold next to make way for better quality players?

I reckon Rafa will be looking for someone to play ahead of Babel. I think Bentley could be an option, and would certainly take him over Milner & Downing who you have been linked with. Though I do agree that he doesn't provide the sort of service Torres thrives on.
Could always just keep Xabi, and move Barry into that position
Can't do much worse than Zhirkov in an attacking LB role.

As for Zhirkov................
The only reason I could see Rafa going for Zhirkov is if we do switch to 4-4-2, Zhirkov would be perfect for the left wing IMO.

Re: Liverpool Football Club 08/09
Liverpool are expected to complete the £3million signing of Palmeiras goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri after sources in Brazil confirmed the player completed his medical on Tuesday and a work permit has been acquired.
BBC
His agent said he was impressed by the welcome he got from Rafa, who apperantly did most of the deal himself like with the young Danish lad we signed. Obviously no faith in Parry
Palmeiras-manager Toninho Cecilio also said to TV Bandeirantes that it was a done deal, almost finalised.
Tim Vickery, journo and expert on South American football described him as being similar to Paul Robinson, thus not very athletic. A decent signing but there are much better gk's in Brazil he also claimed..Actually I'll have a listen again to what he said about him.
Though Brazilian lad on another forums are saying Vickery was being harsh in assesment though Vickery is usually spot on when assessing South American footballers. I think someone here said he is like the Brazilan Petr Cech so it is hard to make a judgment on him.
He could be a decent keeper but I wished we signed some experienced keeper on a free or for around £1M at most.

No offence, but that's the problem with Rafa at the moment, too many squad fillers/back-ups that's get shipped off within a couple of years.
He's had 3-4 seasons to build the foundations - Now it's time for the interior designs.

No offence taken T/S
I'll pass you over to the big man
In terms of the title race, how much are you looking at what other teams are doing in the market?
It's too soon to analyse everything. When the window finishes in August we will see what the situation is with everyone. Really, though, my priority is to improve our squad. As I said, every fan knew we needed to improve in wide areas and we are trying to do this. Afterwards, the understanding between the players will be the key.
So the full-back areas have been strengthened, how confident are you of bringing in more new faces before the season starts on August 16?
We are working really hard. We are close to finishing some deals and we'll see if we can progress with big names and also players who will improve in the future. Again, the plan is to prepare the squad for next season but we must not forget to create something really important for the next few years.
Anyway a net profit on keepers will not be bad at all assuming we get the 2 million for charlie and 4-5 for carson (god help who pays this).

Robinson is brilliant at reflex saves, and his kicking is great also.
He's shite at crosses, he refuses to take command of his area most of the time, and on the rare occasion he does, he's liable to balls it up.
Then there's his shocking positioning on long distance shots and free-kicks.
At least Gomes will command his area 100% of the time, and is a great Character as well, and Character 'keepers who are a little bit odd generally will come through in the big moments.

I agree TS. That's how I would describe Robinson. Not sure I'd describe him as non-athletic
Gomes probably is more commanding, but he doesn't seem too fond of catching a ball either and likes a good flap. He seems capable of the spectacular though, and he's certainly a character.

If he completes the move, will you be looking to strengthen up front? Is David Villa an option?
We have Fernando Torres, Andriy Voronin, Dirk Kuyt, Ryan Babel and Steven Gerrard, who can play as a second striker. But we will try to bring in another option. Villa is a player we know all about and he is on our list. But maybe it will be difficult.
Now we know why he mentioned Villa, because he was asked about him.. All that fuss over an overeager interviewer's stupid question.

Again from the official site:
Having completed the acquisition of his first new arrivals of the summer Benitez is now looking to bring in further additions, although he has ruled out a potential move for Valencia striker David Villa - for the moment.
"I said the other day that he is one of the names we had on our list, but I can say at this moment that it is not an option for us," he said.
"We know Villa is a very good player, we know the price and we know the players we have, so when you consider everything we decided he was one of the names, but at this moment, not our target.
"Keane is one of the other names and okay we are still working with other names. We were in contact and we will see now."
Journalists are so annoying. Someone just ban transfer gossip ffs!!
Been linked with Silva, but Keane looks more likely. We all know Rafa goes for players who really desire to play for Liverpool, usually.

Re: Liverpool Football Club 08/09
Tottenham have won the race to sign Espanyol striker Luis Garcia as it was confirmed today that Robbie Keane is a target for Liverpool.
Spurs made their first move for Garcia at the start of the month and after lengthy discussions the 27-year-old is set to complete his £9.5million move next week.
Espanyol claimed today Spurs are still among 'a group of clubs who are ready to make a concrete bid', with Portuguese side Benfica thinking they were favourites to sign the Spain international.
But Spurs appear to have stolen a march on their rivals after a meeting with Garcia’s
agents and Espanyol’s lawyer, Vicente Montes, last night.
Garcia, who prefers to play as the second striker or on the left, has developed into a key player at Espanyol having started his career in Real Madrid’s youth ranks before
achieving moderate success with Real Murcia and Real Mallorca.
He helped them win the Spanish Cup in 2006 and the following season finish runners-up in the UEFA Cup to Sevilla, who were then led by current Spurs coach Juande Ramos.
He was Espanyol’s top scorer in the league last term with 13 goals, but made it clear he would be happy to move clubs this summer.
Garcia is now expected to arrive in north London early next week to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms.
If the deal goes through, it will spark fresh speculation that one of Tottenham’s three strikers — Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane and Darren Bent — is set to leave White Hart Lane.
Spurs have already spent more than £30m on new players this summer and need transfer funds to boost their bid for Blackburn winger David Bentley.
Manager Juande Ramos, however, could face a fight to keep hold of Keane after Rafael
Benitez admitted his club had 'been in contact' with Spurs.
After ruling out a move for Valencia’s David Villa, the Liverpool boss said of Keane: 'He is one of the other names. We were in contact and we will see now.'

Keegan knows how to spend money, hopefully we'll get £4-5m for Guthrie. Should raise a few quid to spend on wantaway Spurs misfit Robbie Keane. No hurry to sell Alonso, he has 4 years left on his contract, Barry can stay at Villa til they get desperate and offer him as a straight swap for Carson or Pennant.
