Re: Is Wembley really a WASTE ?
It will take time and experiences for the new Wembley to grow a 'soul'....
Although my arguement has always been, with £1 billion could they not have gutted and renovated the old Wembley? It did hold an extroadinary ambience, and history.... a real icon of british football.
I for one am sad that the old Wembley has gone, having been there it will be an experience i'll cherish
I have no intentions on going to the new Wembley any time soon...

Re: Is Wembley really a WASTE ?
Di Canio means that they have uni stadiums with capacities over 90k.
Wembley is the equal-22nd largest stadium in the world according to Wikipedia...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_stadiums_by_capacity
It's worth pointing out that according to this list Wembley is the 2nd largest stadium in Europe - only the Nou Camp is bigger.
Having never been to Twickenham, I'm surprised how big that is!

It is also worth pointing out that Otto is a cunt, and that we should be able to automatically close potential Anglophobic threads...because they are tiresome and boring. I thought after 2 years of the Euroboard the Pr!ck would stop this nonsense, but obviously not. A year ago...creative and original. Now...all pathetic and tedious.

I have never said anything to go againist that have I Blotto, have I?
Have to say though America were at their lowest in 2004 and had a retard running things for them. Europe were at their strongest they have ever been. Langer kept the team spirt and banter between the team up very well.
Faldo is moron I actually do agree and have always thought that. I could captain the European team better then him, I just don't want to

Re: Is Wembley really a WASTE ?
@Otto,
I was at Wembley this weekend, and it is a spectacular stadium.
Worth the money it cost though? Probably not
A fortress for the England football team? Not at the moment
Lacking an identity/history? A big Yes
The problem I saw when I was there was that, due to the cost of a ticket, the raucous fans stay at home. What is left is a lot of fans who don't really feel the urgency to voice their support. Instead they are quite happy to sit down and expect to be entertained, like they would do in a theatre for example. And the fact that there is a sense of everything being far too new and pristine, you don't really get any of that cultural or historical excitement.
OF course, in time that will come. And hopefully will reasonable prices (the cost of a hotdog at Wembley = £6.80)
The result at the moment is, although the atmosphere was "good", it certainly wasn't electric. And of course there was a section who chose to boo Cole for his mistake, which didnt really help anyone. But then after paying out of your nose for a ticket, it is their right.
However it was against Kazakhstan, and to get 90,000 supporters to watch such a game shows the lengths of allegiance England fans will go to to see the team.
At the moment I'm still not convinced with the stadium, but think in time it will prove to be as iconic as the old Wembley.
I hope this was balanced enough for you. No doubt you were hoping to hear it was totally $h!t and nowhere near as good as your typical German Stadium.

you are becoming a wise Leedsonian
any man who uses the word "pristine" either wears socks up to his knees and thinks Mendelsohn is "delicious", or washes his hands after going to toilet
in other words
you would be unlikely to fart in the presence of her Majesty the Queen and could easily become the Royal Keeper of the Blue Mauritius
or let me put it like this
you have become the male Kate Middleton of the Euroboard
it's only a question of time before anglo, haesschen or lesley are gonna drag you in front of the altar
think about it and have a nice day

Re: Is Wembley really a WASTE ?
I think that building the new Wembley constituted an undeniable waste of money, and I don't think the stadium is particularly conducive to positive thinking concerning the national team, or to the national team's success.
Of course the stadium will only become loved and cherished, through time, via events, as it becomes part of history, as it develops its own identity, and the atmosphere in the stadium should improve as this happens - but I think it will take a very long time indeed for this to happen to any significant degree - the old Wembley had a lot of history behind it, built as part of an exhibition heralding the British empire; holding, in its first game, one of the biggest sports crowds ever; and then later hosting the Olympics and the 1966 World Cup - and the new Wembley has none of this, hosts only a few competition finals and often largely irrelevant international fixtures, and is it even possible for the new Wembley to be anything like the old in terms of bearing tradition and producing a good atmosphere when it doesn't have something like England's 1966 World Cup win behind it?
I agree with Otto - internationals should simply be rotated around the country, as they are in other countries. It isn't fair that fans of the national team throughout the country should always have to converge on London if they want to watch the team; and at the same time, the fact that the games aren't rotated encourages, I think, a general lack of interest in the national team. It probably doesn't help to duly limit the players' egos either.
Incidentally, I recall going to St James' a number of years ago to see England play some qualifying match, and a guy a couple of rows in front of me spent the majority of the game droning 'What a load of rubbish' again and again - but I'm sure you find such supporters all over the place. And besides, it is not good for the England team to live artificially.

I think mainly because its hard for fans around the country to actually get down to London everytime there's an England match on..if there were some up here i'd probably go to one..noway im travelling all the way to London though..it'd cost too much.

It's also worth pointing out that there are 9 university stadiums that are bigger than the largest NFL/AFL stadium - the Redskins'. University football is huge. Presumably the tickets are dirt cheap?

Why the hell would you want to go and watch a university team play football?
That's the equivalent of 80,000 people going to watch an under 18 league game

No its not, because the best team sportsmen in the US go through college. So you do have a chance of seeing the stars of tomorrow.
