Post by Chocolate Thunder Sat Dec 27, 2008 3:23 am

So pretty much by this weekend every team will have played each other once. So from what, mid-Aug to late Dec... who have been the best players up until this point. It'll be interesting if the same players will continue their form onwards till May.

    My team:

    ---------------------Schwarzer----------------------

    Bosingwa----Laursen----Hangeland---Steinsson

    ----------------------Alonso-----------------------

    --------------Bullard----------Ireland------------

    Geovanni-----------------------------------Young

    ----------------------Anelka---------------------

Myhill, Reina, G.Johnson, Malbranque, Kuyt and em Zaki all deserve honourable mentions.

Anyone else deserve a mention, then post it ok

I like your team, except Steinsson - he's great going forward, but defensively he is terrible to average. In general there's a problem with quality left backs in EPL - Evra and ACole are just playing average football for their standards, Clichy is playing even worse than last year (when he was playing worse than year before), AVilla is playing right back as left back, Everton is playing centre back as left back and I don't even really know who's a starter for Liverpool. So Evra would be my choice.

Also, I like Bullard, but he isn't playing so well for me, I would probably prefer somebody from AVilla - Petrov (if we would like to stick with 4-3-3) or Agbonlahor (if we would go 4-4-2).

And finishing - I would add Jagielka for honorauble mentions, his "assist" to Ashley Young killed his chances for Starting XI, but for his general form he deserves a mention here. And maybe switch Malbranque with Cisse, who's a best player for Sunderland IMHO.

Ireland is flavour of the month, how dare you point out that he's human.

Fabregas had a similar season last year, started excellently then was pretty inconsistent but every time he had an above average game it was highlighted what a great season he was having.

This board being a microcosm of self important amateur pundits shows plenty of examples of how once you have made your mind up about a player there is very little room for movement. It was decided some time ago that Ireland was going to have a great season and don't let anything as ridiculous as the facts rewrite the history books.

    Kirkland
    Johnson - Carragher - Jagielka - Young
    Jonas - Gerrard - Alonso - Riera
    Anelka - Manucho

I can understand people choosing Robinho, but they're wrong like sodomy. He's had maybe 5 amazing games and the rest of the time he's been a passenger.

Been most surprised by Robinho. Been better in the EPL than he was in La Liga which I didn't think would be the case.

Stuck Zaki in because despite Wigan being a bit shit and him being in a new league he has done well. Anelka has scored, but I don't think his performances have been anything like impressive.

    WHAT?

you could say it about loads of players but not those you'd put in a team of the season so far, certainly not by my criteria. A player would get's 8/10 for 19 games is surely a better candidate than one who gets 10/10 for 5 games and 4/10 for the rest.

Well, Stephen Ireland would probably "get's" 7/10 in most games ive seen him..and a few 8/10s..probably a 9 or 10 for his game the other day. Yet you dont want him in there either.

Do a real one so we can see what all see what the real criteria should be.

    WHAT?

I didn't say Ireland shouldn't be included. Just that the media had made their mind up about him. Robinho is an entirely separate kettle of water. If he'd just been ordinary in the other games it would be a different matter, but his contribution in most games has been of Berbatovian proportions.

I'd expect Robinho to make the best XI of a lazy pundit and an idiot but I had higher expectation of the people on here. If he scores another 10 goals in the 2nd half of the season he'l be heralded a huge success but I'd rather win 10 games 1-0 than lose 9 and win the other 10-0.

Don't get me wrong, he'd make the best XI of the week several times, but he'd make the worst XI just as often so I'd put Agbonlahor, Crouch, Adebeyour, Owen, Defoe, Cisse and maybe even Zaki ahead of him in a team of the half season.

Again it was something I just came up with after talking to my mate.
Put Steinsson in there just to add a little variety plus as you made out, their isn't a standout LB in the league really.

Belhadj who was mentioned by Calidad is a fair shout though if Steinsson cannot defend well, Belhadj doesn't know what the term defend means and is often leaving massive gaps and making mistakes that have proved costly. Attacking wise he is something else.

Jagielka deserves a mention as you pointed out, I remember commenting he was your most consistent player this season but in some very solid displays. Cisse, yeah should be in there as well. Jussi has also put in some quality performances too.

Ashley Cole has had a brilliant half to the season, in fact both our fullbacks have been fucking awesome. With as little bias as possible I'd have:

    Schwarzer
    Bosingwa - Jagielka - Laursen - A.Cole
    Ireland - Lampard - Alonso - Gutierrez

bollocks am I. I don't need to explain myself again, when Robinho is good he is very very good but when he is bad he is awful. No one else in the league is as ineffective when he's not on his game. Maybe Berbatov. And Keane. And Bentley. But they're not in anyone's team of the season so cock out.
