@ Pras Gallagher, I don't think Shearer is overrated. He was a great player and the reason the silly Geordies love him so much is because they saw him every week. He was always a good player for England, he would be perfect for the modern Premiership. You'd be hard pressed to find an informed neutral who could choose between him and Ruud.

Anyway, thanks for all your entries, I will be revealing the correct answer tomorrow evening so their is still time for those who haven't picked their team.

Super Al was good in the EPL, but never tested in Serie A or La Liga so never know really good he was

you can say the same about nesta and maldini so obviously you have a problem with them being named as well?

It beggars belief that both can have been regarded as great players...

But he did very well in La Liga and Serie A, so did Zizou.
I thought Maradona was a flop at Barca.

No, Nesta and Maldini have proven themselves by winning a lot of international trophies so that's enough for me.

I would say Shearer proved himself internationally (mostly because of Euro 96), although he could have done more for Blackburn and Newcastle in european cup competitions. I can see the point made by Pras Gallagher, as PL was weaker than Serie A and La Liga in Shearer's heyday. But his immense goal record and great allround play shouldn't be ignored, i would believe he would have made it big anywhere. Too bad there's few complete strikers around in these days, i like that kind.

    Laugh

    Euro 96: 5 goals in 5 games
    WC 98: 2 goals in 4 games
    Euro 2000: 2 goals in 3 games

Not a bad return at all.

I'd certainly say that qualifies as proving himself at international level.

You can argue about Shearer/Ruud, but neither are a patch on Ronaldo who should be one of the first names in the team in any Beckam XI, and with the amount of quality midfielders he has played with, I'd only be playing the one up front anyway.

Becks-Ruud partnership is a kind of ideal partnership in world football. I don't why, but I think they work well than Becks-Ronaldo but Zizou+Figo-Ronaldo is also awesome

Nesta and Maldini never played in the EPL? scratch

    Razz

they were never tested in EPL or la liga Wink

anyway I would put beckham himself in.

I can't think of many players that have played successfully in all 3 top leagues (although admittedly he only had a couple of games for Milan)

    When?

    About 30 or so occasions.

    I mean which International competition?

Euro 96, World Cup 98, Intertoto Cup 2005. The list goes on.

Euro 96 <Ale> but English atmosphere helped him

    WC 98 Owen was better

    Intertoto 05 shit tournament

Ruud was LC, EPL, La Liga and Eredivisie top scorer a few yrs ago, scored 4 gls in Euro 04 with only robben to help him

Shearer's goalscoring record in English football is better than 1 in 2. His record in cup football is better than 1 in 2 and his record in Europe is better than 1 in 2. He scored 30 goals for England in 63 games. Overrated textbook striker my arse ok

My man Ruud scored 33 gls in 64 caps for Holland and counting. If he didn't missed a lot of penalties, his goal scoring record will be much better. Shearer's goalscoring record is better than 1 in 2 my arse ok

what? It's not a debate! He played 725 top flight games and scored 374 goals.

yeah, but most of the goals were scored in conservative EPL a few years ago
