Alternative to penalties? Empty Alternative to penalties?

Post by fcb Mon Sep 11, 2006 6:15 pm

Blatter said today that he wants to work out a solution where matches aren't settled by penalties because he feels it takes away the team aspect. Fair enough, but what are the alternatives?

Here's my suggestion - scrap extra time, instead each team splits into a 5 man attack and a 5 man defence. Then play on a half pitch for 10 mins each, and the team that scores more within that time wins. But some problems are:

    1. Obviously, what if nobody scores? Should we use stats like possession, shots on goal, shots on target, etc.?

    2. How to settle the fatigue issue...if a team has to attack first, they may say they are more tired then the team that gets to attack second who have had a 10 min rest.

What would you suggest if it was in your hands, keeping in mind we want a team aspect to it.

Play until 120 mins, then until 180 mins if there are no more goals. That'll settle it.

Make both teams managers run from opposite goal mouths to the centre circle, where there'll be a gun with a single bullet in it.

I'm not sure how it'd settle a match... but it would be great fun for when Utd and Arsenal bore us in another FA cup final.

How about the players take turns to kick Sepp Blatter in the balls? It wouldn't decide the game but it would cheer me up no end.

pick 11 random fans from both teams...make em play each other for 15 minutes...bound to be goals..be a great spectacle...players cant complain about being over-worked and it gets the crowd involved...noone can complain either about losing!

You can't decide it on stats or else teams will play so that they get more of a certain stat.

No alternative, because in a major tournament, even the English fans most probably would draw. Then you have a penalty shootout between the fans, with the same result you tried to avoid by getting rid of the penalties in first place...

Because Blatter is a cunt and can't help but interfere with things that he knows nothing about. They tried golden goal, and silver goal, and junked them both.

They're trying to make football more attractive to Americans (read: short-attention-span fools). F**k Blatter and FIFA and the whole boiling, and leave the beautiful game alone!!!

Tweeds/RH i hate pens but i do accept if there were a better solution we´d have found it already. the biggest prob is that we always try these things in the biggest comp first why not try it in some two bob cup comp somewhere first to see how it works i´m sure the comp would be grateful for some publicity which it would undoubtedly get

    This is my suggestion.

At the beginning of the first period of extra time both teams take of 1 defender with will free up more space for attacking.

At the next half the teams take of another defender and replace him with a attacking players.

Goals will most likely be scored this way as their would be more space for the attacking players to exploit. So the team with the best attack will go though.

Not exactly love, but I see them as an exciting part of the game. Nothing beats the tension of a penalty shootout in a major tournament.

You English have invented the most beautiful game, you should be the last guys to propose any changes. Football should remain what it is, the greatest sport ever!

P.S.: My club Werder Bremen just embarassed themselves by losing a penalty shootout against a third division side. Still, I'd never want to get rid of penalties.

I'd say each team to take off one player every 5 minutes. After a while it'll only be 6 against 6 or so and someone is bound to score.

In the early 90s the MLS didn't have penalty shootuots like we (err... the rest of the world) know it.

It was something that resembled ice hockey penalties. Basicly from outside the box the player ran with the ball at the keeper for a 1 vs 1.

They scrapped it as soon as they realised they had no penalty experience once they had to compete abroad. Laugh

Nowt wrong with penalties. leave the fecker alone.

unless fifa can come up with something better they should keep it like it is...ive no problem with penalties..but obviously if something better comes along then its better and should be used...

to say that we invented football and that we shouldnt want it changed is simply stupid...football is constantly changing and always has...

I'd never thought about this before... but the German/ West German national team haven't lost an international penalty shootout since 1976.

So when 2 German teams have a penalty shootout, what happens, does it go to like 13-12 or something? What is 'embarrassing' yourself for a German team, when the goalie doesn't score?

Have an Big brother style phone-in after 120 minutes for the team you want to win.

Roll out a pregnant Davina to read out the results in the centre circle over the tannoy.

Or alternatively, get the tannoy announcer to ask the crowd to cheer for the team they want to win, and whichever team gets the loudest response goes through.
