But Arbeloa is more of a sure card and has experience from Cl and Spain. Those two have had one good season at top level. With that said I always prefer left footed players at left back because it will mean that when/if Arbeloa comes forward he will have to switch to his right foot to cross.Olé wrote:So, you could of signed Marcano for 6 and Canella for 2, but, you're in all likelihood, going to spend 5 million on a right back.

He has more experience but he's already an international. So when he's been benched, when your playing against the minnows, I don't think he's going to be too pleased.
Arbeloa will do well for you in CL, when you need to man-mark a player out of a game, but do you really need him for the regular season?

That is true but I don't think he has to be benched against all the small teams. Some times we might want to play with Ramos being very offensive and then Arbeloa is a fine choice for a more conservative full back on the lef. I would have prefered for a left footer but it isn't the worst with Arbeloa.Olé wrote:Super De La Red wrote:But Arbeloa is more of a sure card and has experience from Cl and Spain. Escudero taken back to Villarreal. Apparently it will be there last "signing" of the summer.

Decent tranfer season for Villarreal. Have brought in a young, talented striker (Nilmar), a very promising CB/LB (Marcano), and Escudero has potential as well as a LW/AM.
They obviously have excellent options in the centre of defense and at LB now, as well as upfront, the wings, and in goal.
Think they could have done with buying a CM and a RB though.
I don't think we'll see any changes in their first choice XI at the outset, but they've definitely added to their depth which has cost them little in previous seasons. Disappointed to see them let Mati go, even if he has gone to a good team.

I think Angel is good enough at RB to be honest.
Probably could do with another CM or two though like you say.

La Liga Loca explains why not too many clubs were banging at Fenerbahce's door asking for Guiza:
http://fourfourtwo.com/blogs/laligaloca/archive/2009/07/31/the-forgotten-man-of-spanish-football.aspx
http://fourfourtwo.com/blogs/laligaloca/archive/2009/07/31/the-forgotten-man-of-spanish-football.aspx
A large chunk of the transfer talk over the summer has been David Villa’s ‘will he, won’t he, loves me, loves me not’ move to either Real Madrid or Barcelona.
But it seems that this particular chapter in the year long saga has been closed - until at least Christmas - with the Mestalla forward’s declaration on Tuesday that “I was told I should leave Valencia for the good of the club, but then soon after everything changed.”
But there is a curious case of another Spanish striker who was also pushed and prodded onto the transfer market - a striker who is a Euro 2008 winner, a former top scorer in la Liga and a footballer who is guaranteed to bang the ball into the onion bag wherever he plays.
But there has not been a single iddy-biddy story linking this mystery man to club in la Liga - a fairly astonishing occurrence for the gossip-crazy local press.
That footballer is Dani Güiza.
At time of writing, Güiza is on the brink of a move from Fenerbahce to Lyon for 12 million euros.
And it looks like a smart move from the French club who are looking to the Spaniard to replace the lost goals of Karim Benzema - last seen hobbling past the blog at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night pretending to talk into his mobile - and partner the ex-Porto striker Lisandro Lopez.
So the big, burning question to be asked is why Spanish clubs, to coin a phrase, “wouldn’t touch him with yours.”
After all, the 28 year-old knows la Liga inside out and is a proven scorer at club and international level.
Güiza popped in 20 goals for little old Getafe in 61 games, but it was at Mallorca where he really shone by becoming la Liga's ‘Pichichi’ with an astonishing 27 strikes in 2008.
But even that wasn’t enough to keep him in Spain, with Fenerbahce bringing the Andalusian to the Turkish league.
Although not as prolific as in previous seasons, Güiza still managed 11 goals in 31 under the stewardship of Luis Aragónes.
So what has stopped a Spanish club bringing the Jerez-born forward home?
The 12 million euros fee is certainly too steep for most cash-strapped clubs in the league, but the likes of Atlético or Villarreal could probably scrape together the funds for a player who is guaranteed to bring in a good 20 goals.
The blog has spent some time asking the movers and shakers in the world of Spanish footie what’s going on with Güiza.
And the answer that came back is that he always brings more baggage with him than Maniche heading to a picnic.
It won’t take more than a second for the FourFourTwo lawyers to agree with the statement that Güiza has always enjoyed the excellent social life offered by Spain.
During his time at Getafe, club president Angel Torres complained that the forward would ring him up in the early hours of the morning completely lost in the mean streets of Madrid and asking for help in getting home.
This is partly due to the fact that - as the other half of La Liga Loca admitted in somewhat cruel fashion - Güiza is “the thickest person I have ever met.”
Even the forward himself famously admitted that “the night confuses me” - so much so that Getafe were forced to put him on special diet of pureed food after he picked up stomach problems having enjoyed one too many, too many times in the Spanish capital.
Güiza’s tales of tabloid woes are legendary, and include the time when he was very nearly dropped from the Spain squad after breaking the rules by having his ex-wife spend the night with him in the team hotel before the recent friendly against England.
In his defence, the international forward claimed that the nookie-free night was a chance for him to catch up with his son.
Güiza’s relationship with his on-off partner, agent and boob-outer, Nuria Bermúdez, is also an issue for many potential suitors.
And that’s not even mentioning his mad old mother.
All-in-all, it seems a tad harsh that no-one in Spain seems willing to take a chance on Güiza.
The forward seems like a simple but misunderstood soul, from very humble origins but perhaps a player who needs a prison cell to live in when the sun goes down.
But the message on behalf of anyone living in sizzling Spain is “don’t we all?”

Real Madrid Agree Xabi Alonso Deal - Report
After weeks of wrangling a deal has been reached...
Real Madrid have had an offer of €32 million accepted by Liverpool for Xabi Alonso and a pre-accord has been sealed that will see the player move back to Spain this week, according to a report.
A meeting between the two clubs in Barcelona at the weekend saw a thaw in the frosty stand-off, and with Los Merengues showing some goodwill, an agreement was reached, Sport state.
Liverpool were holding out for £30 million, while Madrid were keen to pay only €30million, but the rise of €2m has seen the Reds accept the offer.
The Spanish giants' director general, Jose Angel Sanchez, met with Liverpool's financial director, Christian Purslow, in a hotel within walking distance of Camp Nou.
Talks were friendly, but firm, Sport believe, with Madrid accepting that they would have to move their bid up if they were to persuade Liverpool to let the player go.
Alonso has made it clear that he wants to make the switch and become part of Florentino Perez's new look Galacticos, and for such a sum Rafa Benitez is willing to do business.
A deal with the player himself was reached weeks ago and he has had to remain patient while the two clubs postured and searched for a way forward, but now that has happened he can prepare for the transfer.
Before and after Liverpool's friendly against Espanyol in Barcelona on Sunday, Alonso, whose father Periko played for the Blaugrana, remained tight-lipped about joining Real Madrid.

Lol, read carefully, it's from SPORT.
Marca are still the most accurate source for all things related to Madrid transfers this summer, and they say a deal is nowhere near to being done, with Liverpool refusing to budge from their demand of 35m + 5m in variables.

Hopefully Valencia will give him a real chance this season because Fernandes-Banega is potentially the strongest midfield in La Liga imo especially with Silva ahead of them."I do not want to leave now as I am working hard to get a place in the first team," Banega said according to calciomercatonews.com.
"I am indebted to this club, at the moment my intention is to stay."
