Tough opener and away from home but that was to be expected with our main title rivals at home with a easier games, we all knew that Very Happy
6 opening day away games in a row now since Rafa joined us.

Ok so. the first two fixtures gives us the chance to right a couple of the wrongs that led to our failed challenge last year. The run in looks nice, and I like how we are at home against most of our rivals in the first half of the season, as we're usually at our best in the last few months.

Hopefully we'll win a game in January this time too Smiley

Oct and Feb are crucial months for us.

    ... and yes I'm bored.

Very true. Missed one thing mate, we must keep the likes of Mascherano and Alonso. It's as important as making any further signings in my opinion.

You only have 35m euro to spend total though. It would take more than that for Mascherano alone.

We think Glenn Johnson is worth £18million, so Rafa probably values Masch around £50billion. You can't afford him...and what's wrong with Yaya?

    Arbeloa:

    guardian.co.uk

"The renewal is up in the air," he explained. "Normally, it would happen in the coming year. But then if an offer arrives Liverpool have to study it to see if it's better for them to sell me now. When you play for a team like Liverpool there's not many places you can go at the same level. You have to find another team which fights to the end for the league and Champions League. It's not easy."

The Spain international also admitted the threat of a 50p tax rate for those earning £150,000 and over would encourage a talent drain out of the Premier League, confirming concerns made by the Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger.

Arbeloa said: "In the last few years the Premier League has been much better than the Spanish league, but now that may even out thanks to factors that could give the Premier League more problems than in previous years, like the fall of the pound and the raise in taxes. They will make a lot of players move to Spain. Mind you, Adidas told me that the Liverpool shirt is their best seller, more so even than Madrid, so that shows that the Premier League has reached every corner of the world."

Liverpool, meanwhile, are braced for a bid from Barcelona for Javier Mascherano despite Benítez's recent declaration that "not even £50m" would tempt him to sell the Argentina captain. Mascherano's agent, Walter Tamer, met officials from the European champions in Spain yesterday (WEDS) to discuss what personal terms would be on offer should the midfielder attempt to force through a move to the Nou Camp this summer.

If he's more interested in taxes, he can sod off. Interesting line about Adidas though, it just again shows our inepitude to negotiate deals to maximise potential when it comes to the commercial side of things. Looks like Ayre is doing his best to sort things out for the future though.

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has seemingly confirmed that his Anfield future is in some doubt.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez looks under increasing pressure as the long-term futures of his midfield stars Alonso and Javier Mascherano appear far from certain.

While Mascherano's agents have held discussions with Barcelona, Alonso has intimated he may also be looking for a better deal elsewhere.

Speaking in South Afirca, where he is competing in the Confederations Cup with Spain, Alonso stoked up the speculation surrounding his future.

"Would you be disappointed if you end up having to stay at Liverpool next season?" he was asked.

"I can't answer that question," he replied.

Benitez has already insisted he does not want to sell any of his key players this summer, with the club releasing a statement last week stressing their desire to keep the midfield duo.

Losing Mascherano and Xabi would be a huge step backwards...Probably equivilent to Man United losing Ronaldo. If the media reports are right and they both want to go Barca and Madrid are going to have to stump up a hell of a lot of cash. I can't see us selling them for less than £30million each. If Xabi is saying that then we can't help but think that he's on his way.

    Not good news at all.

Seriously doubt you'd lose both CT. On the plus side, you would get huge money for both and Rafa I'm sure would be able to bring in some almost as good replacements and use the rest of the money to strengthen the wings and attack.

For instance, I would expect Masch to command a fee of around £40m and Xabi £30m.

WHY are loads of EPL players suddenly sucking Barca and Real off though Question

I can understand Barca, but Real?!?!?!

All of the foreign players in the premiership are mercenaries...its not like they have any real allegiance to any of their clubs. Barca are the best team in the world right now and I can see why Macherano would want to be part of that team, and while Madrid are being ridiculous with the money they're spending they're creating a dream team full of the worlds best players. I don't blame Xabi for wanting to play for a team like that - he'd be on a massive salary too.

I guess they're just looking for more prestige, success and bigger salaries.

I don't know if Rafa could replace either of them without making huge changes to the team. There's not many players like Xabi around, and replacing the best DM in the world is always going to be difficult.

Though saying that, I agree that we probably wont lose both in the same window. Still, if they want to leave they want to leave.

Xabi is possible more difficult to replace. If you sold Masch you could bring in someone like Toulahan to fill the void. Can't really think of anyone Xabi-esque that could be brought in. Possibly Sneijder as part of the Xabi deal?
