It all depends on who you sign as a replacement COTR. You're a football club and want to win the league again after aeons, no bank.

did Alonso improve at all under Benitez, or have Madrid just paid £40m for a player who is worse than when he left La Liga for £10m?

We got 5 years and £35 million out of him
Rafa can shop Spanish all he wants
Did you sign Alonso on a free?
£26m - £10.7m = £15.3m profit.
Tidy piece of business by Liverpool financially, on the pitch however it remains to be seen.

We can't sign anyone as good as him. Rafa's best bet for this season is to sign a good replacement and spend a fortune on strengthening the relatively weaker wide areas. We have now lost our centre midfield advantage over other teams so have to make it up elsewhere

I am discounting the £10m + wages for the return we received over the years from having him in the team
£35m profit

But you can't discount the fee you signed him for £10.7m for Real Sociedad.

So if you go with the Madrid and Manc logic (no surprise they support this theory) that we sold for 30m Euros.
Then we made £16m profit on Alonso, and got 5 years worth of service.
My issue is not with the fee, at minimum £26m and maximum probably £35m, we have plenty of cash to spend on a replacement. Which i believe is actually the reason the fee is undisclosed, so the players that we now target, their clubs will not hold us to ransom as they have no realiable information regarding the fee. After all why else would the fee remain undisclosed? the fans only can about success and replacements, not whether we could have squeezed a couple extra mill - absurd logic.
Absolutely no idea who we should sign, as there is no apparent direct replacement for Alonso, however i've faith in Rafa with a mini war chest at his disposal to get the right players.
We probably have access to about £35 - £40m. If Rafa gets the right player(s) then we will be just fine next season.

The funny thing is that this is the second player that Florentino signs this summer for over 3 times the price we could have signed him many years ago. Kaka was offered to Madrid back in 2002 but Florentino didn't want to pay 12 million Euros for him. Xabi Alonso was on the brink of signing for us back then as well, but fat bastard Camacho didn't rate him so now we are signing him for a lot more.
We'll probably sign Delfour for 50 million in 2012

What does your wonderful president use as the justification for blowing his load on Kaka and Ronaldo ?

It doesnt matter about what Perez says.
If you trying to work out a profit for anything, you have to deduct the inital outlay from the final fee.

Since Real Madrid paid you, clubs will assume the worst (= huge war chest) and try to milk you as badly as they can.

I wouldn't say that you can't get anyone as good (or even better) than him, everyone can be replaced. The problem is that the league is going to start very soon, so whoever you sign as a replacement, how talented he might be, he'll need time to adopt. And since the central midfield is one of the most important positions, it could cost you some valuable points in the title race.
The timing is just bad.

word on the street is that Madrid paid £30m cash with £4m in add ons. Bearing in mind we almost sold him for £14m last season, I'd be Sgoater with that.
Now let's make sure we don't give it all back with silly moves for their Dutchers.

I don't see many out there doing what Alonso does. Our team is short of technique and very direct without him. He was the one who controlled things and brought balance. I fear for this season without him

I would find it hard to believe the figure of 30M€.
firstly, Liverpool were in a relatively good position, possibly the best in years, to win the league title, and this is especially important now that Man Utd have equalled their total number of league titles.
secondly, even if he was cheaper last year, this year's market pricing is inflated plus Alonso probably had his best season last season and I think last year Liverpool thought they could do without him, which I think many now think would be very difficult.
Also, last year they would have been able to get a Gareth Barry for the same 20M, basically swapping him for Alonso, and he is no longer available. Any replacement would now either be more expensive or untried in the premiership, which is where Liverpool's focus is.
And finally, considering that Real Madrid were clearly wanting him very badly, would Liverpool have caved in so desperately in the end, not even having RM meet them half-way?
All in all, a great signing for RM and bad for Liverpool. Where are they going to strengthen now suddenly?

They're fucked and they know they are. Last year was a fluke season and they still won nothing. Carragher is a joke, Alonso is gone they have no real back up for Torres and Masch doesn't want to be there

For Real point of view, for me they are expecting too much from Alonso, putting him behind players not at all famous for retaining ball, he is the one expected to control everything.

I don't understand why Benitez is going after Poulsen. He's a DM with absolutely none of the ability on the ball that Alonso had. It would basically be a Sissoko-Mascherano midfield again.

The fluke was Man United winning the PL. If Liverpool will get Aquilani they will be fine. He's better then Xabi.
