bluenine wrote:Its time to do this poll again. Same rules - name your World squad of 23 players, with the following break-up:
3 Goal Keepers
7 Defenders
7 Midfielders
6 Strikers
The idea is that if you were the coach of the "World", which players would you pick... The further break up into CBs, FBs, DMs, wingers, etc ic completely up to you.
We will use the results to come up with the EB World Class squad of 23 at the end of it, just like we did in 2007.
Take a shot.
Buffon, Cassilas, Reina
King, Nesta, Alves, Evra, Ferdinand, Chivu, Maicon
Xavi, Iniesta, Essien, Diego, Gerrard, Toure, Ribery
Messi, Ronaldo, Drogba, Ronaldhino, Rooney, Eto'o
Even being past it, a fit and motivated Ronaldhino will walk in a World Squad..

In that case, why not put Adriano in your squad? or even fat Ronaldo?

Adriano doesn't come close in terms of talent compare to Ronaldinho, whilst Ronaldo is truly past it and cannot envisgn him ever being properly fit.
Ronaldinho is still making the first team for Milan and IF motivated enough can get to the peak fitness levels as before (Although fitness issue isn't a problem, especially compare to the other two).

I can see why... Its a tough category, there are 8 players who are very deserving... its more difficult coz Ronaldo & Messi take up 2 of those spots, the rest 6 have to fight for the other 4.... Drogba, Torres, Ibrahimovic, Eto'o, Rooney & Villa... it probably ends up about who you have seen more of... can you justify why Villa over Ibra or Rooney?
Yep. He carries a Valencia team in crisis for the last two sesons and maintains his form whatever the team does and he is an integral component of the European champions. Spain without a fit Villa is unthinkable. Would Rooney or Ibrahimovic get into Spain's side? Ibrahimovic was not Barcelona's first choice striker to replace Eto'o. Both Real and Barca coveted Villa - the European champions in one case and he was wanted by several clubs in Europe, who can see what he brings to the table. He also works hard for the team. Anyone who sees him play more than a couple of times couldn't leave him out.

I agree that Villa is clearly one of the best strikers in the world, but I don't think he's as indispensable to Spain as you claim. Even in the Euro let's not forget that Villa did not score after the second game, and the team did fine after his injury. I think the team is also more than capable of playing well with a 4-5-1 while giving the likes of Silva, Cesc, and Iniesta more freedom to roam behind the striker.

Look how many goals he scored in qualifiers for Euro 2008 and now WC2010. Torres didn't even score once in the recent qualifiers.

Silva-Cesc-Iniesta behind Torres is an alternate option. Not to forget the range of talents such as Mata, Pablo, Carzola, Granero (hopefully no Riera) queuing up. Negredo next to Torres is also quite good. No wonder Spain is a nailed-on favorite for WC2010, and I hope they do well.
But I guess Spain would rather play Villa ahead of Torres in a 4-5-1.

Villa seems to be on a mission to break Raul's record while Torres has looked a bit disinterested in the latest games. I think the difference between both players will lessen in the world cup. I do consider Torres to be more replaceable than Villa though.
But I think saying that Spain is screwed without Villa is a gross exaggeration. The only truly indispensable player in the Spanish team is Xavi, with Iniesta and Silva as close seconds. The rest of the players are replaceable to some extent IMO. Even Senna, whom I thought was Spain's best player in the Euro, has proven to be more replaceable than I imagined.

You are correct there. But thats also coz Ibra's asking price was higher. Were Barca willing to pay an equivalent of Eto'o plus 45m for Villa?? I rate Ibra over Villa or Torres, very different kind of striker tho. Would Ibra make the spain starting XI? I think he would, hey, I would stick him in a world XI. But that depends on what strategy the coach wants to use.
I have seen a lot of Villa, really rate him, but I wouldn't pick him over Ibra. Maybe its a case of who you have watched more, like I said before. There is not much seperating the top 7-8 strikers in the world, except from different styles & strengths.

I'm a huge Villa fan too. For me he's the best striker in the world by far right now. Has all the attributes except size, and that's not really his fault. Scores and creates at will. I do think him and Xavi are the only 2 players in the Spain XI that are irreplaceable.
