Rooney

An interesting discussion last night between 2 everton supporters in the boozer, both are convinced that rooney´s rate of improvement since he left Everton is virtually non existant. Their point, he burst onto the seen in a blaze of glory and they aren´t sure as a footballer he has really developed dramatically at man utd, obviously a good talent, but has fergie really added that much too him since he joined him as was the perceived wisdom when he signed?

Frank people just not looking at it in a sensible way.
It's easy after he had a bad game to come out with such things.
But at everton he got more booking than goals, in prem last season 16 goals from open play and top assists in the league, this isnt a big improvement?

Can't really respond to this in detail because I'm in work, but surely this is some kind of trick question or something.

Those Everton fans are living in denial if they don't think he's improved in the last few years. He's gone from being an impact substitute to a prolific scorer/assister in one of the top 3 teams in the country and probably one of the first names on their team sheet.

yes....a big improvement...i went to both west ham vs man utd games last season and i have to say when you watch rooney live you realise how good he really is.

we went 1-0 up against man utd at upton park and were really looking like getting something...the catalyst to the man utd comeback was rooney.

He has improved but is entering a plateu at th emoment the same which other young talents do as Cesc will do etc.

The real test is whether at 23/24 he can come out as a world beater

all this its not me, but as a FOOTBALLER has he improved or is he just doing it more consistantly, personally i do think there is a subtle difference, imho he has improved but not as dramatically as i´d expected

rooney is a better footballer... no question about it... what he hasn't done however IMO is live up to the reputation or expectations he (or the press) have forged for him... maybe he just isnt as special as everyone thought he was. but these expectations are hardly really his fault.

a bad time to judge at the minute especially on the back of a few poor games from him but as keane indicated he still has a hell of a lot to prove. at the end of the season we'll probably know the best answer to this

That's because the expectations with regards to what he'd become were ridiculous and still are.

He burst onto the scene in a spectacular manner - that first touch and then the finish against Arsenal was top class and ever since people have been expecting a proper footballing god to enter the pantheon of the greats alongside Pele and Maradona - it's just not going to happen.

Exactly. He'll never be a Pele or a Maradona. He won't even be a George Best imo.

The best we can hope for (England and Man United) is someone like a Bobby Charlton.

Also, we have to remember that he was an unknown quantity when he burst on the scene.

Since he has been at Man Utd, people have know what to expect, yet his goals and assists tally keep on improving.

Last season in the EPL he got 16 goals and 9 assists, the 3rd best goals tally and the 2nd best assists tally AND none of those assists were from set pieces.

Yes, he's improved greatly. Only people who'll say otherwise are ABUs or jealous Evertonians. Stats are better, involvement in play is better, all round game is better, has retained all the 'organised chaos' of his youthful game...

He has improved but not greatly. The reason why I say this is because while he has improved in the league, he has not improved in the international stage, he has actually gotten worse. He was great in Euro 2004 where he scored 4 goals and was England's MOM against France. But since then, he simply can't seem to score and runs around like a headless chicken a bit too much. Rooney really needs to learn some tactical discipline and be more prolific in front of goal.

How many games did you watch him in at Everton and how many games have you watched him in for Utd?

Bear in mind he was injured for the World Cup. His last great performance for England was in a competitive friendly (i.e. not one of those pointless international friendlies that mean nothing) against Argentina. He's not been amazing for England in the last year, that's true.

International football doesn't count though.

The reasons for this can be pinned on the fact that at Euro 2004 teams didn't know what to expect and that since then SGE played anti-football.

Both factors mean that Rooneys international record is unnassessible.

He's not a headless chicken at all. Thats a phrase well over used.

He just thrives on space and against good and organised teams he gets far less of it.

I think we will see a better Rooney once United have settled prehaps after the addition of Hargreaves in January or the summer,

I don't think playing in the teams he has been playing in with Scholes central then Giggs central, Nistelrooy then Saha has really helped him at all.

Onmce the team settled down last year he came back to form after going on a goal drought and in my opnion playing pretty poorly.
