Messi wouldn't even be able to tear Maldini in his current form(retired) to pieces.

Messi is still a youngster and he has two cl's. Ronaldo didn't manage one. And you cant even say Messi is playing with a better team Ronaldo had Raul(when he was good) Zidane, Figo, Roberto Carlos. I voted the bottom option. People do look back with tinted vision what Messi is doing now is the limit...he cant do much more and Ronaldo wouldn't have done much more either.

Re: Messi 2010 or Ronaldo 1997?
I don't think it's Ronaldo's fault that his team couldn't win a CL is it?
Ronaldo was one of my faovurite ever players and he made the 2002 World Cup his tournament, I think Messi needs to do that for Argentina and then there can be no debate.
I personally think Messi will do it though, maybe not at this WC but the next one. He will go on to be the greatest ever footballer for sure, let's be honest here, he's 22, he's won everything there is to win with Barca, he's broken records, he's done everything and all that's left is to win a WC.

It's a very stupid question lrd, and not relevant to the thread title. Ronaldo didn't play CL football until 1999 and he was injured for most of it anyway.

But for a side, which was very comfortable in defending too as a unit, aften having 2 DMs and playing with one striker. Same goes for Italy NT.BoBo Vieri 32 wrote:Nesta did play for a very attacking Milan side though.
I don't want to question Nesta's ability, because I really rate him, and he's one of the few Italian players I don't hate, but would love to see him playing in his prime outside of his comfort zone. Not necessary in circumstances like Samuel, when he was put in position to fail from the start (playing alongside aging Hierro, with two crazy attacking full backs and poor protection from midfield), but some other scenario than Serie A/Italy would be interesting.
Btw - how was Ronaldo playing for Internazionale, when he wasn't recovering from torn ligament?

No its not, actually the trend his about how well they have both done over a club season, the CL is a big part of that.
The WC is more irrelevant

The world cup is once every 4 years. Messi plays for an inferior team. People talk like Messi has to win the world cup....but Ronaldo never won the CL and it's once every year and he played in the best team in some of those years....so is it a stupid question to point out hypocrisy?

I thought the comparison was Ronaldo 97 vs Messi 10. Ronaldo didn't play CL football in 97.

Well true which makes Messi's league achievement all the more impressive since he was playing big CL matches at the same time.

Re: Messi 2010 or Ronaldo 1997?
Ehm Nesta played in a very offensive Milan team in 2003 that won Cl with a diamond formation of Pirlo-Seedorf-Gattuso-Kaka and attacking fullbacks. Also Samuel never played alongside Hierro because he left the club 2 years before Samuel played for us. Also Samuel played alongside Helguera,Salgado,Carlos when they were all crap. Plus he had either Gravesen or Guti ahead of him to protect him. Add the fact that we couldn't keep the ball which was how we used to protect our Cb's and it is not particularly strange that he failed.stinger wrote:But for a side, which was very comfortable in defending too as a unit, aften having 2 DMs and playing with one striker. Even then he improved in the second half of the season and we had the second best defensive record in the league. Holding this against any Cb is incredibly unfair and when you look at his record for Roma and then Inter it becomes more of an anomoaly then anything.

Samuel would always struggle in a team that doesn't protect him very well no matter who his partners(in defence) are. His lack of place would always be a problem 1 v 1 , and he's got a turning circle of an oil tanker. Play him in a system where those deficiencies cannot be easily exposed( like at Inter for example) and he'll look class, play him in La Liga where defenders are probably exposed than any other major league in Europe and you'd see the sort of performances at Madrid. He's great defender in his own right but i'm not a fan of defenders of his ilk coz they limit your tactical options, for example if u are a goal down and want to play 1 v 1 at the back, u can't do that with someone like Samuel.
