And in today's episode of "Disgraceful actions done to Cesc Fabregas by those rude people of Barcelona", we have him surrounded by a bunch of kids in a swimming pool, threatening to drown him if he doesn't sign.

You guys will love these new comments from Xavi today:
It depends on Barça and Arsenal. Cesc has said that he wants to come. I hope he plays with us. Him and I are compatible. He is a player with the Barça DNA.

God knows, Barca can still do a U-turn and have another go though it appears Rossell has changed his tack and is now looking to use this missed opportunity as another ammunition against Laporta. In any case their time and money (whatever they can scratch together from the back of the sofa) would be better spent on Torres who'd be a lot more available than Cesc will be this summer.
Barcelona president plays down chase for Arsenal's Cesc Fábregas• Rosell says bid may wait until next summer
• Spain midfielder is on post-World Cup holiday

Cesc Fábregas appears certain to be Arsenal's captain next season after the Barcelona president today said his club would not attempt to buy the Spain midfielder this summer. However, Sandro Rosell said that he intends to make a new offer for Fábregas next year.
"Arsenal feel very hurt by Barça," Rosell told Catalan television. "They don't want to listen to offers or sell and they are not putting the player on the market. There was a strong dispute a few months ago and they have not forgotten it. He will come, even if it is not now, it will be next year. We will see. One thing that is certain is that we will not be throwing the house at trying to sign him. No shareholder would pay €60m [£50.6m] or €70m [£59.1m] for him. We would only pay his value in the transfer market."
Arsenal see their captain as priceless and their angry reaction to what they considered to be a derisory first bid, of €30m [£25.3m], was hardly surprising. Barça's recent €27m [£22.8m] sale of Yaya Touré to Manchester City provides context: the Ivorian is a defensive midfielder who was rejected by Arsenal seven years ago.
Arsenal will hope that Rosell's words draw a line under another summer of speculation, of the kind that was a perennial feature of the close season when Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry captained the club. However, Arsenal will not be sure that the matter is closed until Fábregas returns for training after his extended break following Spain's run to the World Cup final.
If Fábregas handed in a transfer request, the scenario would change again. In that event Arsenal would appeal to him to recognise the financial consequences for both player and club. If Fábregas submits a transfer request he will forfeit loyalty bonuses worth millions of pounds and significantly reduce the fee Arsenal could demand from Barcelona.
As matters stand, the Catalans have been forced to admit that they are moving towards a period of austerity and that Fábregas is out of their reach.
"We are making a policy to rationalise our costs, using common sense and prudence," said Rosell.
Despite his Spain team-mates' post-World Cup prank of forcing him to wear a Barcelona shirt, Fábregas's most recent comments have indicated that he will stay in north London. He dedicated his World Cup winner's medal to Arsenal's players, fans, manager and staff this week.
His bond with Arsène Wenger is strong but the manager's contract has only 11 months to run. Both club and manager foresee talks on an extension being resolved in the coming months, but should such talks stall then Arsenal could face the prospect of losing their captain and their manager next summer.

1) Torres isn't available
2) Torres is more expensive
3) Have you seen Torres trying to play Tic-tac football ?
They would be better off just saving the money until Cesc demands to leave next summer

Arsene Wenger is expecting the transfer speculation surrounding Cesc Fabregas to stop after talking to the Arsenal captain.
Barcelona have been trying to persuade the Gunners to sell Fabregas this summer and have seen one offer flatly rejected by the Premier League club.
Fabregas has previously suggested he would be keen to return to Camp Nou, but Arsenal have been steadfast in their refusal to countenance his exit.
New Barca president Sandro Rosell has now all-but conceded defeat in his bid to sign the Spain international this year and Wenger is hoping the rumours will grind to a halt.
Too much talk
"There was too much talk," the Arsenal manager told Sky Sports News.
"I always said that we are really, really wanting him to stay as he is such an important player for us.
"He's our captain, we want to keep him and that's why we are not listening to any offers.
"It just was not a problem of money, just the desire to keep him at the club.
"It is stopped (the talk). We never wanted to start anyway."
Wenger confirmed he had discussed the situation with the midfielder, but did not want to divulge the contents of the conversation.
He added: "I have spoken to him, of course, but I never come out publicly with what we talk about.
"There was a lot of unneeded talk that was not helpful for Arsenal Football Club and that's why I don't think we have to add anything to that.
"I know what is important for us. Arsenal Football Club is a massive club and what is important is that everybody focuses on being successful next season."

I doubt if it will stop. And the person who's come out of it worst is Cesc - he was complicit and his standing with Arsenal fans have been damaged, no question about that. I doubt if he'd have acted the way he did if he didn't have good reason to think that Barca will get him out and he's been let down. A rather shabby way to treat a player they claim to have their DNA in him.

So now it's Barça who are the villains for treating him badly and breaking his relationship by the Arsenal fans by not signing him
Stop spinning this all kinds of ways, Arsenal fans. Just come to terms with the fact that Cesc wants out, and the only thing Wenger will achieve by keeping him this summer, is getting a lower fee for him when he inevitably leaves next summer

You've been saying the "inevitably leaves next summer" line for the last four years, haven't you learn't your lesson yet?
The Spanish media must be better than I originally thought if Hem fet un.. thinks Barca have a first option and Kas believes they can get him for a lower fee. Unless the price is something that we find acceptable we are just going to find ourselves living out the same scenario again and with the same outcome.

Yes, but this is the first summer where Barça have actually made an official bid, and more crucially, the first time Cesc has openly spoken of his desire to leave. This time I genuinely don't see him staying beyond next summer, unless Arsenal win something. Wenger can't convince him to stay forever.
Barça do have a "first option" of sorts - basically, one of the conditions when he was sold (or rather, when the compensation deal for him being stolen was being worked out) was that if any club makes an offer, Barça have first option to match that offer.
Let me ask, what price is acceptable for a player you got on a free transfer, has spent 6 years with you, and wants to leave?
I believe the value of the remainder of his contract is around 35m euros (hence the initial bid). How much of a premium do you expect on top of that?
Keep in mind that this is not a 'normal' signing for Barça...there are mixed feelings about it in a purely sporting sense anyway, and even more doubts from a political aspect. You can expect 60m or 70m or whatever from Real Madrid or Inter, not Barcelona.
The board is spending big money for one of our own youth players that was nicked away. You took advantage of the player's desire to leave when he was 16, we'll most certainly take advantage of his desire to leave now

I don't dispute the fact that Cesc was complicit in the whole affair, as I said, but the way Barca made such a circus of it, as a sideshow of the tawdry power contest, was pretty poor. That we would not let him leave without a fight was only to be expected, and if there was actual serious intention to get Cesc this summer they did everything to scupper it by engaging in a very public tapping up campaign, which showed total lack of respect for Arsenal and only hardened the club's resolve to hang onto him. My take is that they always knew they wouldn't be able to afford Arsenal's asking price, and are even now looking to pressurise Cesc into handing in a transfer request, but that may be a bridge too far for Cesc however much he wants to go back.
I still love Barca for their football, but I don't like what I see from the club these days.

Barca are c**ts but what the fuck are Arsenal fans complaining about. He wants to leave you STOLE the fucker. He has given Arsenal some great years and whatever you make is pure profit. Look how well Pique has done for them possibly the best CB in the world right now we sold him for 5 million or something. You're getting 40 for Cesc. For a team who has stole Barca youngsters for fun the complaints because they're going to buy one of them back is unbelievable.

I just cannot understand why Barca want Cesc back... he ditched them at 16, before he could contribute/repay Barca for their faith in him... why would Barca want to give him another chance, and encourage such behaviour? If I were a Barca fan, I would prefer the president publically makes it clear that Fabregas would never play for Barca again, ever... Just so that the existing 16 yr olds in your academy watch & learn.
And its not like Barca really need Cesc, good player that he is, but with Iniesta & Xavi their midfield is pretty well covered.
And yes, I don't like the public tactics Barca are employing in this case... never a good idea to destablise the other club... maybe it will be poetic justice if Barca manage to get Cesc back, only for Wenger to snare away a bunch of gifted kids from Barca's academy! And kinda ironic & sad at the same time...

As I'm sure you've seen written many times, no Arsenal fan expects Fabregas to stick with us forever and a transfer next summer would be a possibility if the terms were right. You're right in the regard that Wenger can't convince him to stay on year after year, I'm sure even he knows that.kas wrote:Yes, but this is the first summer where Barça have actually made an official bid, and more crucially, the first time Cesc has openly spoken of his desire to leave. I never knew that, in a way it does make sense as those sorts of things are agreed all the time. However it is an irrelevence considering how unique the situation is, the player will only ever leave Arsenal for one club, and other rival clubs know this and won't waste their time chasing a player who would have no intention joining them.kas wrote:Barça do have a "first option" of sorts - basically, one of the conditions when he was sold (or rather, when the compensation deal for him being stolen was being worked out) was that if any club makes an offer, Barça have first option to match that offer.
I don't see how we got him has much of an impact on his value, this was seven years ago now and we even reasoned with you at the time by giving you an international class player for next to nothing who was an everpresent in a team that was very successful. You agreed to that and although I can understand you bringing that up it doesn't bare much influence on me.kas wrote:Let me ask, what price is acceptable for a player you got on a free transfer, has spent 6 years with you, and wants to leave?
Yes he wants to leave, everyone knows that he had a meeting with Wenger expressing his desire for a transfer but I don't see how this reduces his value. If he went AWOL then understandably we would be in a difficult position but given the players character that isn't going to happen.
kas wrote:I believe the value of the remainder of his contract is around 35m euros (hence the initial bid). How much of a premium do you expect on top of that?
A transfer value shouldn't be worked out by the worth of his remaining contract (although according to FIFA's article 17 it does) but determined by is overall ability as a footballer and other important factors like age, potential for further improvements, injury record etc.
For me the absolute minimum would be £50m considering my criteria.
But isn't this one big show of power? Like I've seen you say in the past Laporta wanted to sign him to bring the curtain down on his successful spell as president and also to use it for his own gain in his future political career. With the fact Rosell will want to 'get one over' on his predecessor you can see that we want to take advantage as well.kas wrote:Keep in mind that this is not a 'normal' signing for Barça...there are mixed feelings about it in a purely sporting sense anyway, and even more doubts from a political aspect. I realise that Cesc is essential for Arsenal and more of a luxury for Barcelona.. Which is why I think it is a waste of time at the current moment to try to sign him.
However, what I dont understand is Arsenals insistence in keeping a player that now wants to leave. The club has repeatedly failed to deliver on its pormisises, not becoming more competitive but rather just having the usual 18/22 yr olds come in to replace "stars" leaving. There has been no real signings of top class players so that the club can compete for the league.
Cesc has been doing his best over the years to compensate for an ever changing midfield and now he wants to go back to his childhood club (that incidently showed him how to play the short passing game last season, destroying Arsenal). It is only natural that he wants to compete in a stronger squad, with players like Messi and Pique that he has known for over a decade.
Cesc seems to be ready to take a step up in his career (in Arsenal he is a sure starter whereas in Barcelona he would have to fight for a sport) and Arsenal needs to show some gratitude towards the player and let him go at a decent price if he wants to leave for real (and that is a big if).
All this talk about 50m plus is just nonesense..

btw, Madrid would be desperate to sign him if he showed any inclination to go there.
Also, Rosell's recent comments don't mean Barça are giving up on him...it's just a way to appease Arsenal and "un-Laporta-ise" the transfer by taking it out of the public domain. But according to MD, he will travel to London on Tuesday to make a new bid.

These two posts are because the only thing more repetitive than Barça players saying "we love Cesc, we hope he comes to Barça" is Arsenal fans complaining about it afterwards. Yes, we know you're not happy.
So I just felt I could save the time, energy, and post count of some of the Arsenal fans here by pre-empting their complaints

Yes, because signing him from a regional team at the age of 10 is the same as signing him from the academy of another big club by taking advantage of a loophole in the contract laws
And how do you know Barça paid a measly fee? Maybe it was no fee at all? Maybe it was a huge fee? (in relative terms).
How do you know Barça even "signed" him, and he didn't choose to leave the previous club so that he could progress in his career? Like he's doing now.

PUYOL has told Arsenal to show Cesc Fabregas some respect and allow him to join Barcelona.
Fabregas, 23, has been the subject of intense interest from the Spanish champions, who had a £29million offer for him rejected last month.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has ruled out the possibility of allowing his captain to leave the Emirates.
But Barca defender Puyol — who along with Fabregas was part of Spain's victorious World Cup squad — says the midfielder should be allowed to move back to the club where he started his career in order to win more silverware.
Arsenal have not won a trophy in five years and Puyol, 32, said: "I think Arsenal need to respect his class and show the same class by giving the guy who has given so much to them the move that he and his family want.
"He isn't just being deprived of moving to the best club in the world, more importantly, he is being deprived of coming home.
"He has tried everything to win trophies at Arsenal and when he sees the success so many of his Spanish team-mates are having at Barcelona, it's only natural that he should want to be a part of that."
Speaking to a Sunday newspaper, Puyol added: "Cesc is the future of Barcelona and Arsenal can't do anything to stop that.
"I have just spent six weeks with him and there is only one club he wants to be at."

Not saying this is my point of view but it is a view of many cules:

No, basically it says that it is time for Arsenal to act a bit more realistically. It is a player that wants to leave, that was signed due to the fact that contracts cant be made at that age in Spain (which Arsenal then did for a second time with Merida, and seems to be doing as a general rule all over Europe). Also that Wenger and co should make a statue of Laporta and Gaspart due to the fact that Barcelona has poured close to a 100M into Arsenal for a large number of players of dubious quality. So now that Barcelona is ready to pay a good price for a player that was raised at the club and wants to come home, Arsenal needs to act with some realism and allow the player to go.

It works both ways. Barca need to get real too and see that putting the management, the coach and the team players to publicly tap up a player who has a 5 year contract with another club for months on end is not the best way to persuade Arsenal to 'act with realism'. All they are succeeding in doing is exhibiting their crassness for all the world to see and that they are no better than Madrid in this regard.
As for 100m euros we've got over the years from Barca, if Barca overpay for dubious quality, that's their problem not ours.

Sorry guys, can't find any Barça players' quotes today. Guardiola has a press conference this afternoon though, so maybe that will throw up something interesting.
