At St James' earlier, Ben Arfa's goal certainly felt like one of the best I've seen live, and it was celebrated as such, celebrated by the fans as a really wonderful goal. I thought I'd actually made my admittedly sensitive hands bloody when I felt them throbbing from all the clapping a few minutes after it was scored. At the same time I was aware that it was probably open to certain accusations - to the accusation that it was a little bit push and run, that it involved straight lines rather than twists, turns, bends, deviations of some sort or another. I thought his first touch was audacious, created space, and gave him the momentum for the run that followed; and I thought that run involved pushing the ball at considered, timely moments in order to beat three players before a really composed finish past the goalkeeper. It wasn't the case that Ben Arfa simply put his head down and used his pace to storm beyond players - he had to move the ball thoughtfully and pick his gaps. And regardless of where we might choose to rank the goal - for instance in the europeanboard's annual 'goal of the season' competition, which takes place from a Friday evening to a Monday afternoon across the third weekend in June - it is rare to see a goal so much the product of one player's skill, initiative, attacking impulse, and I don't think there are many players about who could have scored it.
I think it was the sort of goal that would have received rapturous applause at any point; but its reception was perhaps aided slightly by the fact that, prior to it, the game had been a bit frustrating and uninspiring. We started with a 4-4-2 and the midfield looked too stretched, we were struggling to hold the ball high up the pitch and create, and in truth I don't think Ba and Cisse connect well playing up front together. We improved in the second half, with Ferguson on in place of Perch and improving our shape and working hard and playing very tidily down our left, and we started to press more still without carving many good chances.
The win was deserved and really important especially given Tottenham's result - fourth really isn't looking out of the question. I hope Chelsea are at least held tonight.
