They didn't beat NZL, New Caledonia did.
Not taking anything away from Tahiti, good on them, but I think with Australia out of OFC, either they should be merged with Asia, or there should be a play-off between the winner of OFC and the runners-up somewhere else to qualify for Confed Cup. Just like it is for WC qualification.
Not a big deal though, this cup means nothing anyways. But if you have a cup, why not do it properly?

They beat New Zealand by qualifying from the federation that included New Zealand. Oceania would be a complete joke without them - it still is as New Zealand is almost a bye into the Confederation's Cup and a play off to World Cup. Tahiti has made a dreadful federation remotely interesting. Without Australia, there is little point to this federation, but at least Tahiti make this competition more interesting. Hopefully they improve and get assistance. Otherwise there is no point to Oceania at all as you say. While Oceania exists, there can't be a play-off.
If this means nothing do you think that Spain played as if didn't matter? Did Brasil play as if it meant nothing to them? Was it meaningless to Nigeria, Tahiti and even Uruguay and Italy. Only major disappointments were Mexico and Japan so far.

No it isn't the same, but add up the miles and add up the price of such visits, which I'd presume are rare for non-sport reasons. I'll bet that Tahiti's Federation is far from rich and needs real support just to take part in competitions like this. I doubt there is much inter-Oceania tourism. Could be wrong, but I'd guess travel prices there will be pretty horrendous, especially for ordinary people. That federation needs great support, or it needs to be incorporated into a way that can help. Tahiti is a real test of FIFA's intentions. If it truly wants a global game, it has to help properly.

Anyways, Asia is such a big continent with so man rubbish teams, that the qualifying structure is very different to Europe. There are two home and away "play-off" rounds to reduce the team size to a more manageable 20. Oceania nations could continue what they are doing and send 1-2 reps to this stage. I am sure FIFA can fund like 3 away trips for 1 or 2 teams.
At least this way Uruguay will not have a "free ticket" to the world cup everytime. I mean, Uzbekistan could provide a more serious contest than NZL or Tahiti.

OFC team plays someone from CONCACAF actually, so probably Honduras/Costa Rica.
New Zealand made the last world cup, though they played an Asian team in the playoff that time (Bahrain). possibly they rotate the playoffs.
