In light of the fact of recent confirmation that Liverpool are but a Cup team, we, the undersigned, would from this moment prefer if the media would please refer to Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal as the 'Big Three", and leave Liverpool scrapping with the Boltons and Fulhams of the world for the title of "best of the rest"

In light of the fact that Liverpool are the most successful English club side of all time, having won the English league trophy, European Cup, and League Cup more times than any other English side (only the FA Cup, won most by a cup specialist side from Salford eludes them in this respect), and that there is no realistic prospect in the forseeable future of any of the other so-called 'Big 4' matching their achievements, we, the undersigned, would prefer if the media referred to the 'Big 1'.
This might also help the chips on the shoulders of their supporters

No, we failed to win the "world club championships", we haven't played our intercontinental cup game.

Oh and Benitez has beaten Wenger twice in 4 meetings, knocked Chelsea out of 2 semi-finals and beaten Ferguson in the cup. Poor record in the league, but in the important one off matches, he has your number

It was never 4.
Man Utd arsenal battled it out for every title, then chelsea came along.
Liverpool league position 5th 3rd now 4th at best this is not consistent top team like man utd and arsenal and now also chelsea.
The european cup win made people say top 4 but this is a one off in a cup.

Liverpool's tally of eighteen Football League championships is a record for English clubs, their nearest challenger being Manchester United with fifteen. Liverpool have also achieved the League and FA Cup "Double" in 1986 and two "Trebles". The first treble of League, League Cup and European Cup was achieved in 1984 (the first English club to win three major competitions in a single season) and a second treble was achieved in 2001 with the winning of the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup.
Liverpool's total of five European Cups is an English record and the third highest total overall, after Real Madrid and A.C. Milan. The fifth victory in 2005 entitled Liverpool to receive the UEFA badge of honour, thus allowing them to keep the trophy permanently.
Liverpool's total of three UEFA Cups is a record for English clubs and also ties the overall record with Inter Milan and Juventus. The tallies of seven League Cups and three European Super Cups are also English records.

What a cruddy load of wind-up toss. By this logic we'd have been dropped from the "top three" long before the end of last season. Yawn...

wait ..
The most famous type of treble, the European Treble commonly known simply as The Treble, consists of winning a country's top tier league and the major domestic cup competition, as well as the European Cup/Champions League. Only four teams have achieved this rare distinction:
Celtic F.C. - The 1967 team won the Scottish Premier League, Scottish Cup, and the European Cup. They also captured the Scottish League Cup and the Glasgow Cup.
Ajax Amsterdam - The 1972 team won the Dutch Eredivisie, KNVB Cup, and the European Cup. They also won Intercontinental Cup.
PSV Eindhoven - The 1988 team won the Dutch Eredivisie, KNVB Cup, and the European Cup.
Manchester United - The 1999 team won the English Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Champions League. They also won the Intercontinental Cup.
-------------------------------------------------------------
However
Glenn is right -
Liverpool - The 1984 team became the first English club to win three major competitions in the same season when they won the league championship, the League Cup and the European Cup; they missed out on the European Treble as they were eliminated in the FA Cup.
Liverpool - The 2001 team won a unique treble of the F.A Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup. This has been referred to as a Cup Treble. Some opposition fans have mockingly labelled it as the Mickey Mouse Treble. The club also went on to capture the FA Community Shield and European Super Cup, making them the first English team to win five trophies in one year.
There have been several instances of teams just missing out on trebles. Some of the more notable occurences include
Liverpool - The 1977 team won the English League, lost to Manchester United 1-2 in the FA Cup final, then beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 to win the European Cup (Manchester United themselves became the first English side to complete this treble twenty-two years later).

Maybe it is top 4 due to being better than the rest, But reality there is a gap between top 3 and the next team. Just like when people claimed top 4 there was a gap between them and tottenham. I never heard top 5 just because tottenham were better than the rest below them by a distance. So it is top 3

If Liverpool aint a big club then what is?? I mean they maybe don't have a big team, but they are still a big club. I think they won almost as much as all the other 3 together? And they have a huge fanbase as well....and aren't being lead by a Russian mob or an American ginger-jew

@ Fey
Chelsea fans would argue that Roman is more than a owner .. a fan and he wants best for the club ...
I'm not sure (at the moment) if Glazer is on the same level, he really needs to look at Randy Lerner ..
Liverpool are a Big club in terms of History and stature ... but at this moment they are not big in term of who's running the show (aka The Premiership)

Can I just refer all knee jerkers back to obispo's first post
Also does this supposed top 3 just change every season with arsenal being promoted and us relegated in this season's reckoning or is it just a way for the only two people supporting the idea (Lrd and spank) to feel better about themselves.
