West Ham to sign Davenport Empty West Ham to sign Davenport

Post by Deano Wed Jan 17, 2007 11:08 pm

West Ham are set to sign Tottenham centre back Calum Davenport for a reported £4m. The 23 year old who spent 2 months on loan with the Hammers in the championship is said to welcome the move and will go straight into the side for the away clash against Newcastle

Anton Ferdinand is said to be no part of the deal as the Hammers look to splash the cash. The 6 foot 4 former Coventry man is said to be exactly what West Ham United need due to their injury situation in which all 3 central defenders look to be out until late February/March.

Lucas Neill is also set to sign for the Hammers who have offered him a big wage packet and the chance to move back to London. Liverpool and Newcastle have both pulled out of the race to sign the Australian.

£4m for Davenport is far too much, how much did they pay Coventry for him?

I remember his performances for Saints the season we went down. He's not worth 500k.

Well, this is what West Ham need to do, similar to Pompey last season. Get someone in, then get someone better in and so on and so on til you have a squad of 50 and by law of averages 11 of them are going to be ok.

It seems Spurs reserves are where it's at for relegation threatened sides ok

Tottenham have agreed a £3m deal with Coventry for the Sky Blues' England Under-21 centre-half Calum Davenport.

Spurs will pay £1.1m up front for the 21-year-old, with the remainder of the money dependent on appearances.

So apparently a player's value increases fourfold despite his hardly playing for 2 years. You really shouldn't have said anything about having money to spend.

£4m is too much, but if West Ham stay up then it doesn't matter.

Hes not that good, whenever hes played for Spurs hes been the worse defender of the pair.

Hes ok I suppose but not worth anywhere near that price

I disagree....Dawson is worse when King isnt around...it seems Dawson relies on King to be confident...Davenport is well liked by the Spurs fans and hes done well recently.

£4 on a player who probably wont ever be a first choice player (unless this means that Gabidon or Ferdinand are off) seems like a waste.

The defence is a bit of a shambles, and I'm sure Curbishly knows better than me, but bringing in a mediocre overpriced centreback is no substitute for coaching.

Neill on a nominal I can understand, he's a bargain and lots of clubs would fancy him - don't see why he'd leave Blackburn for West Ham but that's another story.

Fair enough, he may well have improved since his days playing for Southampton, which is understandable.

its being reported for £2.5m now anyway....at the end of the day we have no centre backs for at least 5/6 weeks and we have money to spend...if we dont buy some defenders ready for Saturday then we will lose again due to Dailly at centre back with an 18 year old!

Well, it's a bit more money than he's worth but you've got a big more money than other teams in the shitty end of the table, so I suppose you're going to have to shell out a bit more of it to get players.

Certainly he's an improvement to your squad, which is shaping up. 2 very good players in, 1 good player in, maybe another 1 or 2 to come. I hope you stay up.

    King>Dawson>Gardner>Davenport.

The game at Cardiff convinced me he wasn't Spurs Quality - with the amount of "non-decisions" he was making, it was criminal that we didn't get punished. Good Luck to him. He should compliment Neill nicely, but he should be out once Gabbidon's fit.

£4m? Good stuff. Still, not as good a sale as Frank Arnesen (£8-10m) or the best one, Luke Young @ £4m. ok

When Gardner played in relief of King last season, we were a lot better defensively compared to when Davenport has been in... beating Bolton at home, drawing at Highbury etc. etc.

Gardner was always injured. And I suppose no-one would pay that much for Davenport if they hadn't seen him play Razz
