IMO a defensive midfielder, defensive defenders, goalkeepers, work horses up front, hard working midfielders are NEVER allowed to win this title because they are not "real footballers" no matter how good these players play on that position. They are only players who stop the opponent to play attractive football. That's how I see it!

PS as well as Gattuso played on wednesday, if the ref wasnt a Milan fan he would have been booked after 15 minutes and sent off after 60 minutes, if he carried on playing the way he did. Somehow he managed to get away with 1 yellow card, despite making at least 2 yellow card tackles and persistent fouling. Savage would have looked world class if the ref gave him carte blanche to do what he wanted.

ok The ref should have given Gatusso a yellow card after the 2nd foul. He was clearly fouling Man U players as long as he got a yellow card. The referee whistled a good game but on that he was too tolerant!

    Fitting response <Ale>

I rated Mascherano with Cambiasso and Eissen coz of what I have seen of him at River and Argentina.... this last season, he has not been at his elements - only now he is showing what he is capable of... he is right up there IMO! Very shrewd signing by Liverpool, might just win them the CL...

rafa loves sissoko but he is ruthless and sissoko is a bit impetuous so won't settle for just being a reserve.

it'll be sad to see him leave but having 4 top quality centre mids at one club is hard to maintain. juve are his likely type of destination (waft would love this Smile )

but knowing rafa he'll probably try to keep as big a squad as possible

it's good to see a ref allowing contact and ordering the divers onto their feet. it happened in both semis and was very very refreshing

I think some of the mancs have been complaining about getting a raw deal from the ref (Lrd and Rez) but I honestly have no idea what they are referring to. perhaps they wanted another ref like they got in lille Smile

Vidic should have been booked and I said that earlier in my post, I dont remember Heinze doing any tactical fouls or dangerous tackles though.

I cant be asked to go on about it again, but after watching Scholes get two yellow cards in Rome, its a travesty that Gattuso wasnt booked after 30 minutes and only got a yellow card for trying to strangle Scholes.

We wanted the one from the 2005 final, maybe he would have disallowed one of Milans goal and gave us a controversial penalty.

Mascherano/Mikel, got away with alot and were also lucky not to get carded in the other semi. If you get the same sort of weak refs in the final, you wont see much football, just lots of fouls.

Gattuso only made one foul in the first half, then two more in the second before he was booked for the incident involving Scholes. The referee perhaps could have booked him for his third foul before the Scholes incident, some referees might have, but this one didnt. And whilst at least two of Gattusos three fouls were clearly deliberate, to disrupt the play, none of them were dirty - unlike all of Scholes numerous fouls in the first leg. I dont appreciate tactical fouling at all, and would never desire my team or anyone elses to trip people on purpose, but Im more against vicious fouls. And both Heinze and Vidic made far more nasty fouls, similarly without being booked. The whole idea that Gattuso could have been booked in the first half and off early in the second is nonsense.

Anyway, Gattuso isnt the best player in the world and I agree that such destructive players like him tend to get too much praise for playing what often amounts to a limited role. I think its a very valid point that good defenders necessitate better attackers and obviously any successful team needs both, but ultimately I think theres a point to which a lot of defensive players are more limited than attacking ones - both have to read the game, but to be a top quality attacker requires a degree of natural talent, skill and quality on the ball, whereas defenders often simply read the game, get in the way of the ball, then get rid of it. I dont go with the idea that all teams need a destructive midfielder, not least because this often results in players without any class who simply sit in front of a teams defence and kick and trip whomever comes near. Man Utd had a bad game against Milan, but I do think their method this season of having midfielders who can pass the ball and cover defensively, whilst not having anyone who is primarily destructive in the sense of staying back and tackling, has worked well and can work if there is a proper balance.

That said, I do think Gattuso is one of the best in his role, because he reads the game so well, covers a lot of ground, and he can pass the ball properly too. I think hes maybe only behind Essien in that, with Cambiasso close, though I see him as a bit more creative than either.

I think Gattuso is the best midfield destroyer in the game, but his distribution leaves a lot to be desired.

However, I think his main job is to get the ball and to give it to one of Pirlo, Seedorf, and Kaka. Gattuso will be remembered as one of the Italian greats simply because he has won the World Cup and was a HUGE player during it.

Players that have been mentioned (Ince and Essien for example) will never get that recognition (unless Ghana suddenly win the WC).

Although Gattuso’s technique is a little crude, I really enjoy watching his contribution to a match. His relentless energy is channelled in such a focussed manner that he must be so difficult to play against.

Milan have struck the perfect balance in Gattuso, Pirlo and Kaka. Complement that with some direct wingers and it will be an absolutely perfect midfield.

Perhaps not, but he would typically give Gattuso alot of credit for "getting stuck in".

Who says you have agendas against Italian footballers? You might be misinformed about alot of things regarding Italian football, but that is natural, you don't watch it as much since you don't support an Italian team.

Yes don't feel upset Bernd. Suggesting that Gattuso was the best player in the world was certainly not ridiculous. I don't think he was underappreciated. He got the credit he deserved and in fact stole some of the limelight from his sidekick Ambrosini and the fullbacks behind him.
