agreed i´ve said it loads of times roman hasn´t got where he has money wise without being v ruthless and he hasn´t spent all that money not to win the ECVL so undoubtedly a humiliating third place (regardless of opposition given their buying power) would bring the sackdoninha wrote:@chirssicross: IMO, yes.

Re: Werder Bremen 2006/2007
I wouldn't automatically agree, though you've probably both got a point. If Mourinho fails again in the Champions League this season, especially at the first hurdle, his tenure starts to have a hollow ring to it and he probably would jump before he was pushed. You're surely right about Abramovich's ruthlessness Frank but what wise alternatives are there? Surely he's sharp enough to see that things are arguably pretty even between Bremen and Chelsea this year; third would be a bad result, granted, but even second could be a good result. Chelsea could quite plausibly perform acceptably (well, at least, as well as they usually do) and fail; after all, they came second to Liverpool in a much weaker group last year, and were ultimately outclassed by Barcelona without underperforming.
Who could, or would, replace the "special one"? Besides, Chelsea have more pressing things to worry about even before taking on Bremen; they're slightly undercooked at the moment and again Middlesbrough have proved their superiority to them (haha) in only the second game of the season.
What a group though. With arguably the best teams in three different top leagues this could be the most exciting pool in years. I can't wait.
And remember Werder boys, you'll have plenty of Arsenal and Liverpool fans cheering you on too. Prost!

Another plus for the werder boys, Barca - Werder is the final match of the group. If (and I expect them to really) Barca have already qualified by then, they'll field a "lesser" squad, and make it easier for you. And foiling Chelsea's qualification plans in the way.

Werder Bremen's 100 percent record in the league has been ended today as they lost 2-0 away to Schalke. Goals came from Kevin Kuranyi and Hamit Altintop with a goal in each half.

Re: Werder Bremen 2006/2007
People are still certain it's going to be between Chelsea and Bremen, yet I've told you all, Barcelona are more than beatable. Look at tonight for example.
Not sure how they actually 'outclassed us' too. We had similar possession, more shots, more shots on target at the Camp Nou last year.
You can't really count SB, because we played over 60 minutes a man short, but both sides had created a similar amount of chances before the sending off.
No way is this a 2-horse race my friends

Re: Werder Bremen 2006/2007
Managed to get to see your match on Friday (though I was a bit late and so initially missed the Kyanyi opener).
Gentlemen... I was disappointed, not to say empört. Trying to be polite but...! I do hope this was a one-off for you. One thing that really did disgust me: what was up with the defence and theludicrous offside plan you were trying to play all the time? It was like Germany v Costa Rica but a million times worse. In a game when so many of your key players were off form, what kind of suicide was it to repeatedly play offside as the only technique of defending? An utterly clinical team would have beaten you 6-0 and I am scared now for the Chelsea games. Replace Kuranyi with Shevchenko...
I think it was the goal for 2-0 when maybe the sixth attempt to play offside failed about two or three yards inside your half; at this point it looked to me as if this was a genuine experiment, to use an offside trap as the exclusive means of defence. In which case, what mindless arrogance, especially against a team rated third (?) in the Bundesliga. The worst of it was that people like Fritz do actualy look decent defenders. No wonder Wiese was struggling to contain his anger, not only after but during the match; I have to agree with your remarks earlier Chrissi, but even then there was more than one one-on-one where a top striker should not have given the goalkeeper a chance.
Sorry, I'm not trying to be rude on your thread but I do hope you can reassure me that I won't be so disappointed next time and that you will bounce back! Just having heard so much about your boys... I do still wish you all the very best, especially in the Champions League!!
Herzliches Beileid anyway (and I know my own team has problems...!)

With regard to our defence you're right, even though at the end of the last season our offside trap worked relatively well (ask Nedved ). The problem is a complete new defence was playing against Schalke. Fritz, Pasanen, Naldo and Wome played Instead of Owomoyela, Fahrenhorst, Naldo and Schulz and it needs a lot of practice to use an offside trap. So it was even a lot more risky than normally to play like this.
But the problem was not only our defence: We played far too arrogant, far too lazy with too less effort and ideas and so we got what we deserved. And Schalke had a very good day.
However you shouldn't expect too much defending from Werder Bremen and with regard to Tim Wiese and top strikers: He ruined some pretty good chances from Nedved and Trezeguet when we played against Juventus last season...
The good thing is Jose watched this match against Schalke...hopefully he underestimates us now...

No all good... thaks for pointing out the issues with the defence! It does indeed seem to have been bad luck on my part to pick them on a game like that... not even unser Miro able to do anything about it! At least I hope you're not offended by my unkind words, and let's hope you're right about José. But I do imagine that the best managers do actually watch all the foreign leagues (not just Wenger), unlike the Hansens of this world, so that might be wishful thinking – but it's something to cling on to!
Let's hope Merte isn't out too long, for your sake and for the Mannschaft's. We should be all right with a bunch of Friedrichs and Herthaners for Ireland etc, but we'll want him, Metzelder and the rest back for the Czechs...

Thanks for the Merte site, that's kool. With any luck he will be right soon; you need a proper defence for Chelsea! (By the way watching them on Sunday, when at least in the 2nd half (v Blackburn) I thought they were more impressive than in their first, boring victory over Manchester City (of all teams ), I was really fed up with how wasted Ballack was – or at least is at the moment – in their system, with two superb defensive midfielders and Lampard going forward; he wasn't able to do much, though in objective footballing terms Lampard should now be the one to be dropped!) Let's hope Ballack doesn't have to many insider tips to give them on how to beat you.
It's not that I cared that much, but one really has to go out of one's way to find such matches here if you're not equipped with loads of satellite stuff, and obviously after Hertha I'd like to see Bremen do well in Germany, and indeed after Arsenal in Europe, and especially after all your "hype" one expects something ! I'm very good at getting into supporting even secondary teams and it's more fun that way - especially when you have effort and expectations involved. (e.g. I had SO much fun supporting the Aussies in their WM matches – especially the Croatian match, when I was in Munich.)
I didn't get to see the disastrous 4-1; as far as I know there are about two places you can go in London if you want to see a match like that (though I'd be delighted if anyone knows of more options), but now post-WM I'm making more of an effort to see matches if I possibly can.
By the way don't be too disheartened about the "shitty match" – my dad, who never gets to see matches like that, said "they look like two good teams"! I'm just concerned that it wouldn't necessarily have convinced our English associates of the mighty quality of the Bundesliga...

I have to admit I hardly ever watch EPL matches, only recently I got a bit more interested because of Michael Ballack.
