Re: Board question: Where are you based?
I live in Sweden, in the north, in Umea. I essentially moved here two years ago now, to live with my girlfriend who is from around this area, though we spent a few months living in Istanbul last year besides other travelling.
Im from York in England, however, after being born in Durham - I lived in Chester-le-Street for two years before my parents moved to York, where I lived until coming here. All else aside, I have the greatest affinity for Russia, and I would like to live there at some point for some period.

Hi,
I’ve been to Sweden – Stockholm specifically – a few times in the last few years and I’ve really enjoyed each visit. The next time I visit I plan to take a trip up north to enjoy the wilderness and the never-ending summer nights – oh, and the aurora borealis if I’m lucky.
A friend wants me to go with him to Istanbul for a short break as he has some friends there. He keeps mentioning an island that’s close to Istanbul. He says he’s been told it’s particularly enchanting and beautiful. Are you acquainted with it?

Yes, Stockholm is a wonderful city, one of the nicest Ive been to. It has a relatively compact centre once you know your way around, and the buildings on the outskirts are really nice too. I like the island there, Djurgarden. The north beats it though for the environment and weather and things - the air is always so fresh, the weather tends to be dry bar a few weeks mid April-May, in the winter snow covers everything from December to April which means that, despite shorter days, everything stays very bright and nice to look at, and in the summer, like you say, you get the constant light, which kicked in here a few weeks ago. Ive seen the aurora borealis a few times, though only once in any extreme way with lots of clear lights.
As for Istanbul, the islands are called the Princes' Islands - they are a group of six or seven islands of which two are three are uninhabited, and the ferries that go there, every hour, stop at the four biggest ones. We went last September time, not long after we arrived, having heard much in favour of them, and stopped at the third one, the second biggest, before moving on to the last, the biggest of the lot.
I have to say, as far as we were concerned, they were nothing at all to get excited about. The third - which, from what we gathered, read in guide books and so on, was supposed to be the nicest - was covererd in horses mess (cars arent allowed on the island so they use horses), was small with nothing particularly of note but a small picnic area with a few drooping pine trees, three or four samey, unenchanting, tourist restaurants by the water, and a naval base which, obviously, you cant look around. The most we got out of that was a laugh at how bad it was.
The fourth island was much nicer and much bigger, but still nothing special. I can only presume that Istanbul itself is so built up, so hectic, with so little nature, that the Istanbulites get overly excited about the little nature, the relative tranquility there is on the islands. The fourth island at least had some nicer restaurants, some shops, some wider streets and some particular, old fashioned houses. The restaurant we went to when there had a pretty funny menu, with translations like 'straurberriges' instead of 'strawberries', and a main dish called 'sweet balls'!
Anyway, Im sure, if youre going to Istanbul, they are something to see, they are relaxing, the ferry ride is perhaps a novelty and theyre something different by Istanbuls standards. Only I wouldnt get too high hopes, and Id recommend perhaps trying the first or second island - the second I recall having a small beach and sort of California style beach houses (or what I imagine to be California style beach houses) - along with the fourth, whilst skipping the smelly third.
Also, just as a few hints and opinions for if you go, the Dolmabahce Palace is nicer than Topkapi Palace, Aya Sofya is definitely worth seeing as is the underground Basilica Cistern nearby - thats very atmospheric - Yildiz Park (another place I heard highly regarded which is supposed to have a proud history) is impossible to find and not worth it, and theres a restaurant on a side street, off the main street in the centre (Istiklal Caddesi), called Leb-i-Derya that has amazing views.
The person in my avatar is Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, a Russian writer.

Bash
Thanks for the detailed reply. I’ll keep that in mind if I visit Turkey.
We used to grab lunch – a sandwich, typically – and get the ferry over to Djurgarden.
We wandered around Carl Milles’ sculpture garden and watched the world go by down by the river. We also travelled around the archipelago in a small boat. Stockholm is a wonderful city.
Thanks
