Re: Board question: Where are you based?
Halle (Saale) during the week and Hanover (that's where I'm originally from) on some weekends. If I were mean--which I'm not, well, only once in a while--I could say I'm studying abroad, what with being in Eastern Germany and all.

Re: Board question: Where are you based?
Only Bayern would qualify as "studying abroad" in this respect Wiebke. Dunkeldeutschland is still Deutschland...
I actually wonder why foreigners never complained about us 'naturalising' all those Bavarian players in all these years.

Re: Board question: Where are you based?
Butbutbut--today, I had to repeat myself at least three times when ordering some ice cream until the bloke behind the counter understood what I wanted. And I get teased about being a Wessie quite often. Not as much as at the beginning, but still... If that's not like being abroad then what is?blutgraetsche wrote:Only Bayern would qualify as "studying abroad" in this respect Wiebke. Dunkeldeutschland is still Deutschland...

Re: Board question: Where are you based?
'Hatred' is the wrong word, it's meant tongue in cheek most of the time. The ...animosities are mutual, and their roots are centuries old. Northern and Southern Germany are very different culturally (not only for religious reasons), Germany has always been a very heterogenous country, hence the federalist structure.
Bavarians often emphasise themselves that they are Bavarians first, there even is a passage in the Bavarian constitution theoretically 'allowing' them to leave the Bundesrepublik Deutschland. A lot of people in the North really wouldn't mind...

Re: Board question: Where are you based?
I tried to answer that question the other day Tweedle on the Bayern thread with reference to the self-satisfied Bavarian nature but you obviously ignored it – hatred is indeed certainly the wrong word.
Sounds like Wiebke deserves the ribbing; I find the problem is often the other way round – like when I refer to "dreiviertel" with reference to time and people pretend not to understand.*
Sadly I'm still in London for the moment.

Haha......jeez Fey, you really should visit a few linguistic courses, that's just embarassing. Dutch is a Germanic language.

Re: Board question: Where are you based?
Quatsch.
Plattdeutsch, still spoken a lot in Northern Germany, is even older, and that's a proper language, not just a dialect.
Even English is a Germanic language, Dutch is basically something in between Hochdeutsch and English.
'Hochdeutsch' was introduced by Martin Luther and his translation of the bible, and therefore is already quite old. Germanic languages are much older though, thousands of years old, and the influences are still present in modern German.

Well, I am based just northwest of Milano (near lago maggoire) and there are more Juve fans than any other here.
A lot of Italians watch football at home with their families rather than going to the stadium or to the local pub, therefore they tend to follow the teams their families follow.

Isn't Torino about 60 km northwest of Milano? That might explain it. Still, what happend to suport your local team and all that?

no, it's about 150km southwest so nowhere near. Juve are like the manu of italy though, fanbase is made up mainly of gloryhunting fans outside of turin.

I knew that the cities where close. A friend's brother live's in Torino and he said that it's like 1 and half hour drive to Milan.
It's a shame when this happens, more when you have a proper team in your on town.

Oh sorry, I didn't mean any offence in a serious way, just amused that for once the boot is on the other foot and the Ossis are ripping it out of the Wessis... sounds good to me. In a friendly way of course
Ottolein, I'm not surprised you're bigging up the Bavarians, given your board personality...
But really, as great as they are, they deserve some piss-taking. Let's all laugh at Stoiber again:
http://www.die-stimme-der-freien-welt.de/post/20060113/stoiber-transrapid
(The football one is amusing too – all in all you should have added this to your humour thread Otto.)
Murray and Bhoy – whereabouts in Scotland are you based?
