The widely held opinion that serie A is not what it used to be is a bit of a myth. True, the days when the likes of Parma could turn out a dream team every week are gone but technically and tactically it remains the most sophisticated league on the planet. No-one thinks about and analyses the game with the same unquenchable vigour as the Italian's, no detail is left uncovered. And all 20 coaches in Italy are Italian's. And as soon as a kid shows potential, he is wrapped in the cotton wool by the most qualified mentors in the game. This results in a conveyor belt of supremely gifted footballers, Italy have a much greater depth of talent than any other European country. Dont believe me? Just think of the world class number 10's they have produced in the last 10 - 15 years. Gianini, Mancini, Baggio, Signori, Zola, Del Piero, Totti, Pirlo. Not to mention the likes of Morfeo, Locatelli, Di Canio or Simone. Add to this the finest defensive history of any nation and the most disciplined strikers around and no wonder they keep reaching the world cup final every 12 years. So wish away Johnny Englander, but the demise of the Italian game has been greatly exaggerated.
