If you watch Buffon he always trys to catch the ball rather than parry it.

Casillas is certainly the most spectacular goalie in the world. He makes the best saves, he has the best reflexes, and he's the best on one-on-ones. He also rarely ever makes any mistakes.

However, I would put Buffon slightly ahead of him because of the way he commands his area in the air. This is where Casillas falls significantly behind Buffon and Cech. Casillas has gotten better at this over the years, but his height doesn't allow him to be as commanding as the former two goalies. Buffon is also significantly better at penalties than Casillas.

Cech is a close third in my opinion. He doesn't make the spectacular saves Casillas does, but he still makes plenty of great saves, commands his area very well and is great on one-on-ones. His biggest flaw is the he's absolutely awful at penalties. Every time Chelsea go to penalties you know they're in trouble because Cech is not even good at guessing the ball will be hit.

Jens is the most complete and intelligent goalie in the world

best at commanding the entire penalty area rather than merely hogging the line as do Cech, Buffon and Cassillas

Lehmann really completely redefined the job of the keeper

    only

nobody seemed to notice it since he is not Dutch, Italian, French...

Mad Jens doesn't need to command his penalty area. Anybody that comes within 10 yards of his goal gets shoved away.

I'd say Buffon is more consistent than Cech, look at how many mistakes Cech has made this season. When was the last time Buffon made an error like that?

It's the eternal debate that we'll never have a clear answer (luckily since Florentino's stupid ass never managed to buy Buffon). How would Buffon do behind idiots like Salgado, Helguera, Pavon, Samuel, etc.?

My opinion is that Casillas is the best, but I'm biased.

    In terms of trophies:

    Casillas
    Spanish League 2000/01, 2002/03, 2006/07
    Inter-contiental Cup 2002
    Champions League 2000, 2002

    Buffon
    Series A 2001/02, 2002/03
    Coppa Italia 1999
    UEFA Cup 1999
    World Cup 2006

Casillas IMO (a tad biased) is the best keeper in the world, saved our bacon over over the years. He's improved his punching/catching and commanding his area, although it could be improved.

Only really aspect of his game you can question is penalty saving, he's made some saves, but Buffon owns everyone in that department, Cech isnt great at PK's either even though he is a tall lad.

Casillas is the Kimi Raikkonen of the football world

excellent at ONE thing (Hand-speed: ie reflexes and saves)

Kimi is VERY fast: but cannot set up a car, develop a car, motivate a team, develop and understand a team strategy...

Kimi is the fastest in the world when in the fastest car

Casillas is the savest in the world, when on his line

now he has to learn to step OFF the line; he won't fall off the earth; that, he has to learn

Robinho 10 wrote:I thought he'd made a couple of errors, literally two.

The game v Aston Villa - a shot bounced off his shoulder as he struggled to get down, though I don't blame him for that one, nor call it an error, as Grant played him while he had a bruised hip. I slated Grant to high heaven for picking him during that game (given that Cudicini and Hilario were also available). Needless to say that he was then given a proper rest afterwards and has been flawless since.

Imo, it's difficult to say. I would rate them as:

Cech - Best in the air (despite the mis-time jump v Arsenal) it's impossible to lob him.
    Casillas - Best shotstopper.
Buffon - Probably the most consistent though I don't watch enough Serie A to know.

Cech , Buffon and Co are EXTREMELY well protected by their defenses

against Germany Cech had four Czechs in front of him

Kuranyi went on to score TWO

suddenly Cech was just a normal goalie

Jens is so much better because he really is two players in one
