Best team in the world - Goalkeeper Empty Best team in the world - Goalkeeper

Post by Luis Thu Mar 17, 2011 2:54 pm

Ok, so kind of nicked from RAWK but there was a few polls running in recent weeks for each position in the team e.g. 'best goal keeper', best centre backs, best wingers etc

I'll leave the polls open for 3 days, it will be multiple choice but please only choose 3 from the lost (your top 3 right now)

I'll do a first team then a second team based on who has the most votes for each position.

Eventually we'll end up with the Euroboard's current best team in the world.

I'm also stealing the player options from RAWK as I think they did a pretty good list.

So first up is the goalkeeper position - the player with the most votes will be the first team goal-keeper, the player with the second most votes will be the reserve team goal keeper. remember, only 3 votes!

I thought everyone would just choose all 3 of them. If it was a few more weeks in I would have put Lehmann up there <Ale>

I see. It is just funny that some names seem to stick with people even though they have done f*ck all lately. Asenjo two years ago maybe you could have made an argument that he was one of the rising GK prospects but surely nobody could put him in the list today.

Atletico Madrid's third keeper makes the list yet there's no room for Łukasz "the new Schmeichel" Fabiański or Wojciech "the new Fabiański" Szczęsny Rolling Eyes

I voted for van der Sar, Kuszczak and Lindegaard - on current form. Although the unfavoured and long term injured Asenjo ran them close.

There's a whole bunch I've barely seen at all that I can recall (De Gea, Asenjo, McGregor, Weidenfeller, Adler). Then there's the elminiations: Akinfeev's a flapper, Cesar seems error-prone, Hart's not there yet, Cech's long past there, Valdes is a glorified spectator, Gomes is a circus act. And so I was pretty much down to Buffon, Neuer and Reina. Though to be honest, I ain't seen enough of Neuer to judge, he was good in the WC. Could've equally put Stekelenberg.

The same happened with Moya - a run-of-the-mill goalkeeper IMO, but because he was young people assumed he would get better.

Take him out and put Diego Lopez in.

    Why can't I vote???

I would go for Cesar. He's made a couple of mistakes recently and his form has noticeably dropped. However, I think he was by far and away the best keeper in the past 3 seasons for both club and country, so I'll stick with him.

VDS has had a good season, though there's something in me that doesn't see him as a spectacular keeper. Valdes I think is very underrated. I like Neuer too, as well as Reina.

De Gea still has a lot to prove. Akinfeev is overrated.

Probably because nobody is watching him on Club level and he had a very good World Cup.

Too many top keepers has a poor season for their standards, if I would be asked last summer I would vote for Cesar or Reina, now I really don't know. Out of top keepers in top club van der Sar is probably the most consistent this season, plus he still is able to make some spectacular saves (despite some of you trying to persuade me he is on decline when season was beginning).

I'm also in camp of Diego Lopez deserving to be put on the list. Ale

Edit: I can't vote as well Grr

    ?!

He's doing excellently for his club...

Before Maarten got injured (and after Cesar's continuous blundering) he was clearly the best goalie in the world *at that time*.

Was already the best goalie at the WC, but as he's kind of dull and boring (VDS mark II) nobody notices him.

    I can't vote either.

Reina's excellent, but I think he's a bit over-hyped. Lacks something - can't say what exactly - to make him a true top keeper. 6 votes is probably down to the fact that the majority of people on this board watch the Premier League, but not so much other leagues.

Casillas, Cesar, Neuer are the clear top 3 for me, though I don't watch Stekelenburg at club level.

How the fuck did Buffon get 4 votes? Are some people still living in 2006? Laughing

As for Reina, I will say as with all players if you are talking about the best in a given position you would have expected him to have won at least something in his career. He does seem prone to give up the absolute howler more than a top top goalkeeper would. I don't think of him as great in 1v1's. He's good in the air, good with his feet, I guess I can't really think if he is good at penalty kicks or not. The biggest thing for me is his blunders seem to be of epic proportions. Like against Argentina for Spain or was it Everton where he tries to play volleyball? I mean you remember them.
